Annual UW-L Celebration of Student Research & Creativity
The annual UW-L Celebration of Student Research & Creativity is designed to give UW-L students the opportunity to present their scholarly work through oral presentations, poster displays, gallery exhibits, and artistic performances. The event highlights student research and creativity accomplishments and the important role faculty and academic staff play as mentors in the scholarly activity process. The Celebration encourages dissemination of scholarly work results from all disciplines represented in the UW-L academic community.
Eligibility
Any UW-L student engaged in collaborative or independent research or creative activity who is mentored by a UW-L faculty or staff member is eligible to apply. Participants in all disciplines are welcome. The project does not have to be funded by the undergraduate research program in order to be presented at the Celebration.
Deadline for Application
The next UW-L Celebration Research Day is scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2009, in the Cartwright Center’s Valhalla. Applications must be submitted by March 2, 2009. An online application form will be available in January 2009. The abstract should emphasize the results of the research project to be presented.
Presentation Guidelines
For many of you, the presentation you make at the UW-L Celebration of Student Research and Creativity will be one of your first “professional” presentations. The following guidelines will give you specific details about how to format your oral or poster presentation at the UW-L Celebration, as well as some general ideas to think about in preparing any presentation of your work.
Poster Design
If you choose to present a poster at the UW-L Celebration, the printing process will differ depending on which college you’re in: the College of Liberal Studies (CLS), the College of Business Administration (CBA), or the College of Science and Health (SAH). {See directions below for each college}. Each poster should list the title of the project, the student(s)’ names, the faculty mentor name(s), and the department name(s). The poster dimensions should not exceed 3x5’ to fit the poster board. The acknowledgements section should mention the source of your research funding, if applicable.
Students are not obligated to use the UW-L printing services. They can take their posters to area shops, such as Kinkos, Sir Speedy, or Alpha Graphics.
CBA & CLS Students
Students in the Colleges of Liberal Studies (CLS) or Business Administration (CBA) should contact Larry Sleznikow in Educational Technologies (166 Wing; 785-5055). Posters must be submitted at least ONE BUSINESS WEEK in advance of the date needed. If your file is less than 5MB, you can send it via email. If it is larger than 5MB, you’ll need to place it on a CD-ROM or a flash drive. It will cost approximately $45 to have a 3’ x 5’ poster printed on the large-format digital printer.
You can create a poster from “scratch” within PowerPoint (36”X54”) with the knowledge that some aspects such as transparent colors may not print correctly. There are websites that help with the practical details such as
http://meeting.apsnet.org/2006/callpapers/powerpoint_posters.cfm
http://www1.wfubmc.edu/creative/Creative+University/Tip+Sheets/PowerPoint+Posters.htm
OR
You may wish to download a free template to manipulate from several potential sites such as
http://www.makesigns.com/SciPosters_Templates.aspx
http://www.posterpresentations.com/html/free_poster_templates.html (select the 36”X54”).
You could also choose to create your poster in Publisher. Select “poster” under blank publications. Then go to Page Setup, where you can select your poster layout. Publication type should be 'custom'. The width should be set to the actual height and width that you want your poster to be ( 36"X54"). The orientation should then be selected as landscape.
SAH Students
Students from the College of Science and Health (SAH) should contact Steve Harris, Physics Department, at 785-8428 or Cowley Hall 2012 for information on using the SAH poster printer. Students must have their faculty mentor/advisor present when using the printer, which is located in 213 Cowley Hall. Please contact your faculty mentor in advance as they will need to have their card activated to access 213 Cowley. Please use MS PowerPoint to design your poster. The Windows XP computer connected to the printer has a CD/DVD burner and multiple USB ports to read flash drives. The printing cost is $0.50 per square foot and an additional $0.75 per square foot for laminating (approximately $20 to print and laminate a 3x5’ poster). Fill out the billing form that is stored next to the printer according to the specific department. Department accounts will be billed near the end of January each year. For detailed directions on how to use the SAH printer, click here.
DESIGNING AN EFFECTIVE POSTER
Several good sites exist that highlight “best practices” in creating scientific posters.
