The Upward Bound summer session offers high school students a taste of college. Forty students live on campus, take classes that will help prepare them for high school in the fall, attend supervised study sessions and participate in other cultural and academic enrichment activities. Morning and early afternoon classes in math, science, language arts and foreign language, taught by quality area high school teachers, are designed to provide students with concepts and practice through interesting, challenging lessons and activities.
In addition to math, science and language arts classes, seniors take a Senior Seminar to learn about the college culture, application
process and career exploration. Arts and recreation options, large and small
group activities and limited free time complete each day. On Friday afternoons,
students and staff participate in large group fun activities.
Staff training will begin on Saturday, June 15 for residential tutors. All
staff, including non-residential tutors and summer teachers, will have at least
one day of training together on June 17 and/or 18. The all staff training will facilitate cooperation in
planning an effective summer experience for students.
Students move to campus on Wednesday morning, June 19 and have two days of
orientation (no classes) followed by class orientation day on Friday, June 21.
Classes are held on the UW-L campus and teachers have access to classroom
technology, computers,
science labs and other equipment and facilities as requested and reserved. The Upward Bound support staff assists with finding materials, copying, ordering supplies and making other arrangements so teachers can concentrate on teaching.
Teachers prepare and administer pre- and post-tests in each class. They complete a student progress summary weekly for each student in each class. These are used by tutors to review students' past performance and prepare for the following week. At the end of the
first and second periods (June 24 - July 3 and July 8 - 19), teachers give grades for student performance. Final grades are given by each teacher at the end of week five,
July 22-26. These are used to determine Academic Achievement and Academic Improvement
award winners and honors students, recognized at the Summer Session Graduation
Ceremony, Thursday evening, August 1.
Tutors assist teachers in the classrooms as needed and reinforce daily
lessons during daily tutoring sessions. Non-residential tutors will earn
an hourly rate for their work in the classroom and during supervised tutoring.
Residential tutors are "on duty" day and night when Upward Bound students
are on campus. They supervise students in the residence hall, work as classroom
aides and tutors, lead and help supervise other UB programming as needed.
Besides room and board (while UB students are on campus), residential tutors
will earn a lump sum amount, depending on experience, for the summer. Most
residential tutors will also accompany the group during our last four days in
the Twin Cities.
Teaching Positions - Summer 2013 (Creativity

WORLD LANGUAGE
(German) - Teach one
section (per language) for high school students (2:00 to 3:00 p.m.) Prepare curriculum, quizzes, tests including pre- and post-course tests.
Work with assigned classroom aide. Purpose: present vocabulary, terms, concepts,
reading/writing skills, cultural information, etc. to students who will take specific world language class in the fall.
Teacher Salary is $15 to $25 per class/prep hour depending upon degree and experience.
Additional hours are paid for training and evaluation. Participation in training
and at graduation expected.
Tutor Salary is a minimum of $7.25 per hour worked for
non-residential tutors. For residential tutors, payment is room and
board (while students are on campus), mentoring and advising by professional
staff, transportation and admission fees for UB activities, plus a lump sum for
the summer depending upon experience.
Teachers: We prefer applicants with a MINIMUM of three (3) years successful teaching experience and demonstrated ability to develop innovative, humanistic, academically rigorous courses in which each student can achieve success. Successful candidates must be able to establish rapport with rural, minority and disadvantaged students. A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree and fulfillment of teacher certification standards for state of Wisconsin in secondary education is preferred.
Tutors: We prefer students with junior standing or above with
at least a 3.0 grade point average and tutoring expertise in more than one
subject area if possible. We seek solid students, especially students who come
from backgrounds similar to those of UB participants, who can develop a rapport with our
multicultural student population. We prefer world language tutors with study
abroad experience.
