NOW THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION!

"Which is better for my student - one summer class at her/his high school or summer Upward Bound?"

Answer: Unless a student is required to take a summer school class to make up for missing credits, we STRONGLY URGE parents to require their students to attend summer UB, especially if their students are earning low (Cs, Ds, Fs) grades or have a low (below 2.500) cumulative grade point average. Summer UB has been proven effective in strengthening students' academic skills, giving students a head start on their core college prep classes for fall, helping them learn to set schedules and stick to deadlines, encouraging them to build their college level personal skills, making opportunities for them to learn about college and careers, and, as one person said last year, "discover I can do more than I thought I could." This is a very important part of UB and students who do NOT come to summer will not be eligible for the UB Bridge program the summer after they graduate.

"Are parents/guardians supposed to arrange transportation for their students to and from summer UB?"

Answer: YES! Parents are expected to transport their students to and from UB on weekends (leave about 5:30 p.m. most Fridays and return to UB about 6:00 p.m. on Sundays (see schedule below)). If you are interested in car pooling, please have your student talk to others from her/his school so you can set something up.

"My student needs to miss some UB. How should I arrange that?"

Answer: We very strongly discourage students missing ANY UB programming! Our program is packed full of very important components from classes that will help your student do better in the fall to study sessions that will help her or him learn important academic skills. If your student must miss UB, please try to plan the absence during the break times (Mondays through Thursdays between 1:15 and 3 p.m. or 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.) Students will be home from about 5:30 p.m. on Fridays until Sundays at 6 p.m. Missing UB programming, especially classes and study sessions, may cause your student to fall behind. If you anticipate an absence for your student this summer, please email or phone Kate (785-8763) as soon as possible.

If your student must miss a UB meal (again - we strongly discourage this!) - we must have a minimum of 48 hours' notice or your student will be charged for the missed meal(s).

"I want to take my student out for lunch during summer UB. What should I do?"

Answer: Please give Upward Bound as much advance notice as possible AND check with your student or the UB office to see if any special programming is scheduled (senior job shadow, special program, etc.) We must pre-order our meals. If a student misses a meal and without providing at least 48 hours notice, we will charge the student for the missed meal(s).

"What time on Fridays are students expected to be picked up?"

Answer: IT DEPENDS! On Most Fridays, students may be picked up at or about 5:30 p.m. Check the schedule highlights (below) for more details. Remember that WEATHER may be a factor. If in doubt, please call the UB office, 608 785-8539.

WEEK SIX - TRIP WEEK

At this time, we are planning on leaving on MONDAY, July 29 (in the morning) and staying in the Twin Cities through Thursday, August 1. Our UB graduation will occur on the evening of August 1. Trip schedule and details depend upon Congressional budget action. [Update: TRIO programs did sustain a 5.5% cut (in addition to previous cuts over the past several years) which will take effect next year - 2013-2014 - but should not affect this summer's trip).

We'll still have many great teachers, tutors, classes, activities and surprises. Students will have a rigorous schedule of math, science, language arts, world language and skills classes. We'll travel to the Twin Cities for the last week of the program.

SCHEDULE TIDBITS:

PARENTS!

UB's not easy! You may have already heard this from your student! But neither is college, and our graduates tell us that summer UB really helped them be successful in college. Many summer students feel that they lack free time, but this is also true of college freshmen. A college student's CLASS schedule may look easy, with many open spaces between classes, but when you fill in the study time required for each class, you'll find there's not much time that's not taken up by class or study. In fact, for every hour of a college class, students are expected to spend an additional two to four hours of study time outside of class! The full summer UB schedule may seem like a lot, but it's training your student for the hard work they will encounter in college.

This is not to say that UB summer students don't have fun or free time. Recreation and arts options - from cooking to music and dance to team sports - give them a break from academic work. And evening free time, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. each evening, let them have some breathing time. Summer UB is like a training camp. It's building skills, muscles, strength and endurance for students so they can be outstanding at college and graduate. It's a big investment, but the pay off is definitely worth it!

Check this out! Eighty-eight Surefire Tips for Succeeding in College

Many studies have been done about why students whose parents did not attend college drop out of college themselves. Generally, these students have "low coping skills." Small problems for these students become major obstacles and lead to higher drop out rates. Summer UB tries to help students learn better communication and coping skills which will increase their chances of graduation from college and help them in their day to day lives.

How we dress and act has a big impact on what picture others form of us. Psychologists say that first impressions - those formed in the first few seconds - are lasting! For Upward Bound students, this is important! FINE DINE is one way we help students understand that "dress for success" is not just a slogan! Professionals attending our FINE DINE will be "dressed up" as they do while they're on the job. We expect our students to dress well for this event (and job shadowing) as well. Business casual for women. Business casual for men.

Check for the UB Parent Update every Friday when your student comes home.
