Special Needs Community Program
Therapeutic Pool, (608) 782-7300, Ext. 53470

Direct Line (608) 775-5999
Location: First Floor - Gundersen Lutheran Hospital

Special Needs (children must be accompanied by an adult) – Designed for individuals with special needs to maintain or improve mobility and flexibility but because of limited abilities are unable to participate in other community programs. This program provides additional staff and/or allows for caregiver assistance. Physician referral and Physical Therapy evaluation are needed prior to participation. Following acceptance to the program, there is an orientation by the pool staff. The pool staff will provide minimal assistance for dressing and ambulation on land. This program also allows for individuals needing maximal one-on-one assistance to provide their own caregiver to help meet their needs in water and on land at no extra cost. The ultimate goal of the Special Needs Program is to progress participants to an independent status, if possible, so that they may advance to other community programs. Conditions indicating participation in the Special Needs Program would be such things as fear of water, poor balance, poor judgment or comprehension, needs assistance on land and/or in water or with dressing, health conditions requiring special attention (heart rates and blood pressures will not be monitored), or individuals determined to be unsafe and/or inappropriate for other community programs. All children under the age of 18 will routinely be considered Special Needs.

Cost of the program will be as follows:

  • $6.50/visit or $55/10 sessions (to be completed within three months)
  • Suit/towel rental is an extra $10.00 per 10 sessions

Program sessions are held at the following times (NOTE: These are one hour and 15 minute sessions to include shower and locker room time. A maximum of 45 minutes in the water.):

  • Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 10:30am
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
  • Friday, 12:30pm - 2:00pm

Community Recreation
Joints In Motion
Relax and Stretch

Community Recreation, Joints in Motion and Relax and Stretch are group water exercise programs open to adult members (18 years or older) of the community. The classes are directed/taught by a physical education specialist instructor. These programs are not intended for cardiovascular conditioning or weight reduction. Heart rates and blood pressures will not be monitored. The focus of each program mil be adhered to! Some programs will run simultaneously with others and access to these programs is interchangeable.

  • Community Recreation is self-directed allowing the participant to meet his or her own needs for exercise/relaxation.

  • Joints in Motion focuses on joint range of motion and enhancing muscle tone.

  • Relax and Stretch focuses on muscle flexibility/elongation, breathing and muscle relaxation techniques in a slow-paced environment.

Program Participation Criteria

  • Schedule an appointment for a health screening by contacting the therapeutic pool at (608) 782-7300, extension 3470.

  • Complete a health screening and meet the criteria set forth. If health assessment requires it, obtain physician consent for participation in the program or notify physician of intent to participate. We recommend that you contact your physician anytime you plan on a change in your exercise program.

  • Re-screening will be required for re-entry into a program for time off longer than six months or as deemed necessary.

  • Participants will update screening yearly, or as health status indicates.

The cost includes admission into any of these three programs and will be as follows:

  • $5/visit or $40/10 sessions (to be completed within three months)

  • $130 for 3 months (includes unlimited number of classes for three months from starting date/one session per day)
