Suggestions to Explore Majors
As you explore majors, be aware that there are multiple ways in which you can gather information about majors at UW-L. By exploring your options, you will hopefully make a well informed decision when choosing a major. Here are just a few strategies that you can use.
Review Majors Offered At UW-La Crosse
Review the list of Majors and Programs offered at UW-L to see which major warrants further research. By the process of elimination you should be able to rule out some majors that would not work for you. If you do not know enough about a major, research it before you rule it out. Continue to conduct further research on majors that remain on your list.
Review Websites of Academic Departments
Many department websites at UW-L provide students with useful information about the purpose of the major, its curriculum requirements, and reasons why a student might choose the major.
Create a "What If Report"
WINGS gives you the ability to create a What If Advisement Report for specific majors. This feature allows you to see the required classes for the major, any potential admission requirements for the major, and any requirements for the College that the major belongs to. When looking at required classes, you are able to retrieve their course descriptions. Are these the things that you are interested in learning about?
Speak to Faculty Within The Major
Speaking with faculty is a great way to gain first hand knowledge of the major. Having dedicated a significant amount of time to their teaching area, faculty can speak to the requirements and rigor of the major.
Take a Course Within The Major
If scheduling allows, consider taking an Introduction/Foundation course to learn about a major. Whether as part of General Education or as an elective, using a class in this manner may give you the opportunity to see if the major represents a true interest for you or if you should turn your attention to other majors.
Join a Student Organization Related to The Major
Several student organizations on campus are associated with academic majors on campus. These organizations may provide you with the opportunity to connect with students and faculty that are passionate about a major that you are exploring. Find out what led them to the major.
Meet with an AAC Advisor
Advisors in the AAC are available to assist all UW-La Crosse students that would like assistance as they explore majors. Because these are but a few strategies to explore majors, we may be able to make other suggestions that guide you along the process of choosing a major
