Discover
The Academic Advising Center offers a computer based guidance system called DISCOVER that helps students assess their interests, abilities, experiences, and values. DISCOVER helps students develop a list of occupations to explore. It also offers assistance with identifying majors related to those occupations. DISCOVER is used to improve and extend services to students who are undecided about their academic plans or have decided to change majors or career directions.
UW-L students are encouraged to make an appointment at any time to visit with an Academic Adviser and discuss what DISCOVER has to offer. Many UWL 100 classes include DISCOVER as part of their course curriculum.
DISCOVER is a valuable program. However, as you can tell, it’s not designed to “pick” a career field or a college major for the undecided student. It’s very important for students to understand that their use of DISCOVER should be followed up with a consultation with one of our Academic Advising Center staff members. The consultation will help interpret the DISCOVER findings and put the information in context.
The Academic Advising Center isn’t here to decide a career field for a student, or help find the “easiest” classes. Make no mistake about it – going to college is hard work, and there are no short-cuts to success. Despite all the advice we can give, there are also no guarantees about what lies ahead in the career field.
The staff of the Academic Advising Center will provide all the help possible, through:
- Help in developing a list of occupations to explore
- Extensive video and print media materials focusing on more than 500 occupations
- Referral for vocational testing to answer questions about workplace skills
- Assistance in identifying majors related to these occupations
- Complete, up-to-date information on all UW-L majors, minors and programs.
- Referral to specific faculty advisers/ program directors in departments and programs
