"Bridges"
Hello! I wanted to e-mail you to provide you with
information on a brand new program at the YWCA: Bridges. The
Coulee Region YWCA has been a part of the La Crosse Community
for over 100 years, serving women and children in the area. We
have developed a new program that will help us further our
mission of “eliminating racism and empowering women.”
YWCA Bridges is a program for at-risk teenage girls ages 15 to
18. The goal of the program is to help these girls through
mentorship relationships. Mentors help these girls transition
successfully into adulthood by providing hands on life-skills
training, positive adult role-modeling, and a caring adult who
is willing to listen and provide resources for these struggling
young teens.
We are looking for women who want to make a difference within
the lives of our community’s at-risk teens girls! If any of your
sorority members are interested in making a difference through
volunteer service please contact the YWCA Teen Services Director
(contact information listed below)!!

"Transitional Housing Program"
A housing program for up to six women who are homeless and
single with children. We have six scattered site apartments
where the women and children in the program live for up to two
years.
The main goal of the program is to help the women become self-sufficient by transitioning into permanent housing, increasing income and or skills, and achieving greater self-determination. The women work with a case manager weekly and also work with a budget/credit counselor.
Every Tuesday night the women attend a mandatory Transitional Housing support group that is held at a local church in La Crosse from 5:00p-7:00p. There are volunteers who provide a meal and also volunteers who provide childcare for the women’s children (usually not many) in the church nursery.
The YWCA is always
looking for volunteers to provide childcare! Volunteers can
arrive at 5:00p to eat dinner with the group or just arrive at
5:30 to take the children to the nursery.
"Women's Community Based Program"
This is a jail alternative for women serving a sentence in the
La Crosse County Jail. This program allows the women opportunity
to live in one of the YWCA units, work with a case manager, and
become self-sufficient, working on various life skills (i.e.
parenting, communication, employment, education, etc.). The
crimes that the women have committed vary; however, most of them
are drug and alcohol related or money related.
The women are on electronic monitoring bracelets, and there are surveillance cameras at every entrance of each unit. The program has been running since November 1st with no complaints from neighbors.
This program is currently looking for female volunteers to spend time in the housing units with the women in the afternoon and evenings. Spending time with the women could involve facilitating a communal dinner (food is provided, volunteer encourages all women to participate in preparing and serving the meal, and clean up), playing board games, sharing pictures from a vacation or travels abroad, etc.
Our hope is to connect the women in the program with women in the community who are living healthy lives and are on the “right” path. We hope that volunteers connect with the women in the program through various interests and talents. We also hope that both parties learn from this volunteer experience.
