Athletics at UW-La Crosse

Welcome to the UW-L Intercollegiate Athletics web site. Athletics is an important and exciting part of campus and community life at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, UW-L teams provide plenty of action for everyone. Few institutions can match the success of the Eagles' regionally and nationally recognized non-scholarship athletic program. The athletic program supports the mission of the University and the NCAA Division III philosophy that places the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience. A critical component of the quality educational experience is a first-rate intercollegiate athletics program.

Robert Collier wrote, "success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out". With a first rate staff, our 570 student athletes participating on 19 teams have won countless conference titles and 56 national titles in nine different sports, 22 since 2001.

UW-L has won 25 men's track & field titles in school history, the most in Division III history. The Eagles have won 14 indoor and 11 outdoor championships, both ranking first in the nation. With their national indoor and outdoor titles in 2006, the Eagles have swept the indoor and outdoor titles in the same season 10 times (1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006).

The university won the NCAA Division III "triple crown" in 2001-02, claiming the men's cross country title, men's indoor track & field title and men's outdoor track & field championship. With the national titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, UW-L holds the distinction of being the only NCAA Division III institution to win the "triple crown".

The Eagles also captured the 2005 NCAA Division III Cross Country title, the third in school history (1996, 2001).

UW-L has won seven of the last eight National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships. The Eagles have won an NCGA record 12 national titles (1986, 1988, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008) overall.

The Eagles won nine Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles in 2006-07 and finished in the top-four in 14 of 18 sports. UW-L also had eight WIAC Scholar-Athletes last year and seven WIAC Coach of the Year honors. The Eagles had 189 All-WIAC honors in 2006-07. UW-L finished seventh in the 2006-07 Directors' Cup among 424 NCAA Division III institutions, tying for its best finish in school history.

Participation in intercollegiate athletics and interaction with a dedicated, knowledgeable coaching staff, provide student athletes with a physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging experience. The athletic arena is a classroom used to teach character, leadership, self-discipline, commitment, work ethic, respect for difference, and the importance of sacrifice, teamwork and cooperation. Additional leadership opportunities and a voice within the program are provided to student athletes from every team on our Student Athlete Winners Council. Our student athletes are outstanding university representatives, are held to high standards and are expected to succeed in academics and athletics.

UW-L sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports, ten for women and nine for men. Our teams practice and compete in outstanding facilities. UW-La Crosse competes in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), recognized as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the nation. UW-L holds membership affiliation in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association.

Our efforts to communicate and build relationships with alumni, community members, and friends continue to be a priority. The L Club has proven to be a valuable avenue for support of our athletic tradition of excellence. Annually, we pay tribute to former student athletes, UW-L coaches, and individuals who have contributed to UW-L athletics at our Wall of Fame induction held during Family, Friends & Alumni (Homecoming) Weekend.

Thank you for visiting the UW-L Athletics website. We hope you will follow our athletic programs and communicate with our staff regarding questions and opportunities. Go Eagles!!
