Goodwin Hits Three to Lead UW-Whitewater over UW-La Crosse

La Crosse, Wis. Matt Goodwin hit a three-pointer with :01 remaining to give the UW-Whitewater men's basketball team a 65-62 victory over UW-La Crosse Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Warhawks, ranked 15th on D3hoops.com, improve to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the WIAC while the Eagles fall to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
UW-L led throughout the first half, hitting its first five shots to take a 10-3 lead. The Eagles led 24-12 with 8:21 left in the first half on Alex Milsap's lay-up. UW-Whitewater came back to cut the deficit to 24-18, but UW-L scored the next six points to lead 30-18. UW-L led 36-29 at halftime.
The Eagles led by as many as eight points in the second half before the Warhawks took its first lead of the game at 49-47 with 10:09 left on a Goodwin jumper. UW-Whitewater led 52-49 after Goodwin hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt with 9:22 remaining. UW-L later took a 57-55 lead with 6:15 remaining on Matt DeMars' three-pointer and the Eagles led 60-56 with 4:15 left as Andrew Haass converted on a three-point play.
UW-Whitewater trailed 60-57 with 3:01 remaining before Rob Perry hit his only three-point field goal of the game to force a 60-60 tie with 1:24 left. After a UW-L turnover, Perry hit two free throws for a 62-60 lead with :37 remaining, but Tony Mane tied the game at 62-62 with :18 left on a jumper. UW-Whitewater decided not to call a timeout and Goodwin hit his game-winning three-pointer with :01 remaining for the victory.
Mane led UW-L with 17 points while Billy Kegler added 11 points. Haaas finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds while DeMars had seven points, seven assists and five rebounds. UW-L shot 52.0% from the field, including 35.7% (five-of-14) from three-point range. The Eagles were five-of-seven (71.4%) at the free throw line.
Goodwin led UW-Whitewater with 21 points while Perry totaled 12 points and Kori Vernon 10. The Warhawks shot 38.0% from the field, including 26.7% (four-of-15) from three-point range. UW-Whitewater outscored UW-L, 23-5, at the free throw line, while finishing 23-of-31 (74.2%).
UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 12 at UW-Stout at 5 p.m.
