UW-La Crosse Men and Women Sweep
WIAC Track & Field Championships
La Crosse, Wis. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse mens and womens teams swept the 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Eagles won the mens division with 278.0 points while the UW-L women finished with 177.0 points.
It marks UW-Ls 15th straight mens conference title and 34th overall.
The Eagles have won 27 of the last 28 outdoor championships.
The UW-L womens squad won its 12th WIAC title in school history and the
seventh in the last eight years.
UW-Whitewater was second on the mens side with 175.0 points followed
by UW-Oshkosh (162.5), UW-Stevens Point (96.0), UW-Platteville (58.5), UW-Stout
(36.0), UW-Eau Claire (25.0), UW-River Falls (18.0) and UW-Superior (9.0).
For the women, UW-Oshkosh placed second with 162.0 points followed by UW-Stevens
Point (120.5), UW-Eau Claire (97.0), UW-Stout (85.5), UW-Platteville (77.0),
UW-Whitewater (71.0), UW-River Falls (37.0) and UW-Superior (31.0).
Individual results on the mens side included: Kevin Deering of
UW-Oshkosh winning the decathlon with a WIAC record and automatic qualifying
score of 6,999 points. Zach Johnson of UW-Oshkosh was second (6,160)
and Kyle Steiner of UW-Stevens Point third (5,991). Johnson earned provisional
qualifying status.
Pete Ringquist of UW-Whitewater claimed the discus throw at 171-1 while
Brandon Houle of UW-Oshkosh was second (159-3) and Dan Hytinen
of UW-Whitewater third (158-8). All three were provisional qualifiers.
Deering claimed the high jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark
of 6-8 3/4 with Ryan Shepard of UW-Stevens Point second (6-6 3/4) and
Tom Roszak of UW-Oshkosh third (6-6 3/4).
Ross Kapp of UW-Whitewater won the shot put (57-6 1/4) while Houle was
second (55-4 1/4) and John Schuna of UW-Eau Claire third (55-0 3/4).
Kapp earned automatic qualifying standards while Houle and Schuna provisionally
qualified.
Aaron Henderson of UW-Whitewater took the triple jump (48-6) with Mike
Paddock of UW-Whitewater second (47-11 3/4) and Herc Hyland of UW-La
Crosse third (47-7 1/4). All three provisionally qualified for the NCAA III
Championships.
On the track, UW-L took the mens 4x100-meter relay with a NCAA III automatic
qualifying time of 41.19. UW-Whitewater was second with an automatic qualifying
time of 41.23 while UW-Stout was third with a provisional time of 41.75. It
marked UW-Ls second straight 4x100-meter relay title.
Tyler Sigl of UW-Platteville claimed the 1,500-meter run (3:55.29) while
Mark Lalonde of UW-Stevens Point was second (3:56.38) and Cameron
Klein of UW-Platteville third (3:56.76).
Marcus Walgrave of UW-La Crosse took the 110-meter hurdles with a provisional
qualifying time of 14.69. Mike Johnson of UW-Whitewater was second (14.99)
and Joe Schmidt of UW-Whitewater third (15.17).
UW-La Crosse took the top-six finishes in the 400-meter dash as Nate Olson
was first (46.83), Jeremy Deterville second (47.58) and Tony Marcinek
third (47.96). Olson was an NCAA III automatic qualifier while Deterville earned
provisional qualifying status.
Walgrave of UW-La Crosse took the 100-meter dash (10.77) with Jon Otte
of UW-Whitewater second (10.78) and Cameron Austin ofUW-Whitewater third
(10.79). All three earned NCAA III provisional qualifying times.
Joe Boberschmidt of UW-Whitewater claimed the 800-meter run (1:53.66)
with Andrew Boldt of UW-La Crosse second (1:54.11) and Matt Legel
of UW-Stevens Point third (1:54.44).
The Eagles took the top-four places in the 400-meter hurdles as Nolan Hietpas
took first (52.99) with Brad Peterson second (53.13) and Chris Sellers
third (53.40). All three runners earned provisional qualifying status.
Nate Olson of UW-La Crosse took the 200-meter dash (21.52) with Eric
Schmidt of UW-La Crosse second (22.16) and Brandon Wood of UW-Whitewater
third (22.18). Olson provisionally qualified for the national championships.
Nick Boehlke of UW-Oshkosh won the 5,000-meter run with a provisional
time (14:45.29) with Scott Mueller of UW-La Crosse second (14:50.62)
and Tyler Sigl of UW-Platteville third (14:56.61).
UW-L won its sixth straight 4x400-meter relay with a WIAC record time of 3:14.01.
It was also a provisional qualifying time.
In womens action, Jill Crandall captured the heptathlon with 4,559
points while Julie Hoch of UW-Oshkosh was second (4,486) and Katie
Wagner of UW-La Crosse third (4,231). All three earned NCAA III provisional
qualifying standards.
Robyn Jarocki of UW-Oshkosh defended her shot put title with a Veterans
Memorial Stadium record mark of 48-10. She also automatically qualified for
the NCAA III Championships. Danielle Rankin of UW-Oshkosh was second
(43-5) and provisionally qualified while Krista Hasselquist of UW-Stout
was third (41-10).
Jarocki also won the discus throw (159-6) with Beth Proeber of UW-Whitewater
second (138-6) and Terri Schwamb of UW-Oshkosh third (135-7). Jarocki
automatically qualified while Proeber was a provisional qualifier.
Laura Verdegan of UW-Stout won the triple jump (40-1 1/4) for the second
straight year while Jennifer Stafslien of UW-Eau Claire was second (38-10
1/4) and Chelsea Becker of UW-Stout third (36-9).
Samantha Miller of UW-Superior claimed the high jump (5-6 1/2) with Verdegan second (5-6 1/2) and Carrie Morschauser of UW-Platteville third (5-4 1/2). All three are provisional qualifiers.
UW-La Crosse claimed the womens 4x100-meter relay for the second straight
season with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 47.80. UW-Eau Claire
was second (48.17) and UW-Oshkosh third (48.89) as both earned provisional qualifying
times.
Marcia Taddy of UW-Platteville won the 1,500-meter run with an automatic
qualifying time of 4:33.69. Jenna Mitchler of UW-Stevens Point was second
(4:34.10) and Kristen Painter of UW-La Crosse third (4:38.30) as both
provisional qualified.
Jennifer Stafslien of UW-Eau Claire won her third straight 100-meter
hurdle title, tying the WIAC record of 14.48 set last season. It was also a
provisional qualifying time. Liz Goergen of UW-Stevens Point was second
(14.66) with Breanna McMullen of UW-Eau Claire third (14.68). Both met
provisional qualifying times.
Melissa Marvin of UW-La Crosse won the 400-meter dash with a WIAC Championship
record and provisional qualifying time of 56.50. Marie Burrows of UW-Stevens
Point was second with a provisional mark of 57.46 and Katelyn Friedel
of UW-Whitewater third (57.78).
Shelli Gotto of UW-La Crosse won the 100-meter dash (12.55) with Mary
Johnson of UW-Platteville second (12.57) and Maggie Nichols of UW-Oshkosh
third (12.59).
Marcia Taddy of UW-Platteville captured the 800-meter run (2:12.71)
while Jenna Mitchler of UW-Stevens Point was second (2:15.08) and Megan
Kielar of UW-Whitewater third (2:17.98). Taddy and Mitchler provisionally
qualified for the NCAA III Championships.
Liz Goergen of UW-Stevens Point claimed the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.07)
with McMullen second (1:03.34) and Sarah Schettle of UW-Oshkosh third
(1:03.68). All three provisionally qualified for the national meet.
Nadine Pieske of UW-Oshkosh won the 200-meter dash (25.58) with Kelly
Runkle of UW-La Crosse second (25.64) and Maggie Nichols of
UW-Oshkosh third (25.95).
Jackie Mulrooney of UW-Platteville captured the 5,000-meters (17:32.49)
while Julia Rudd of UW-La Crosse was second (17:32.67) and Mitchler third
(18:07.11). Mulrooney and Rudd were both provisional qualifiers.
UW-La Crosse won its ninth straight 4x400-meter relay with a WIAC record time
of 3:52.41. It was also an NCAA III provisional qualifying time.
Nate Olson of UW-La Crosse earned the WIAC Track Athlete of the Meet
while Kevin Deering of UW-Oshkosh was named the recipient of the WIAC
Field Athlete of the Meet Award.
UW-La Crosse mens head coach Mark Guthrie was selected the WIAC
Coach of the Year.
Marcia Taddy of UW-Platteville and Jennifer Stafslien of UW-Eau
Claire were named the WIAC Track Athletes of the Meet while Laura Verdegan
of UW-Stout earned the WIAC Field Athlete of the Meet.
UW-La Crosse womens head coach Pat Healy was named the WIAC Coach
of the Year.
Breanna McMullen of UW-Eau Claire; Shelli Gotto of UW-La Crosse
and Laura Verdegan of UW-Stout were all named recipients of the Judy
Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Kevin Deering of UW-Oshkosh and Matt Legel of UW-Stevens Point were named the Max Sparger Co-Scholar-Athletes.
