UW-L Opens Season at Two Meets

La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse wrestling team opened its 2007-08 season at two meets Saturday .
At the Harold Nichols/Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa, the Eagles had three wrestlers compete. UW-L’s Tim Palmer at 165-pounds and Josh Chelf at 174 each finished third overall. Palmer recorded a 5-1 record while Chelf went 4-1. Dan Laurent competed at 285-pounds for the Eagles and went 1-2.
UW-L sent several wrestlers to compete at the Pointer Open at UW-Stevens Point Saturday with three individuals claiming titles in the Silver Division of the tournament. Matt Mauseth took the 149-pound title wtih a 5-0 record; Corey Ferguson won the 157-pound title with a 4-0 record and Hakin Binek captured the 285-pound crown with a 3-0 mark.
Other top finishers in the Silver Division included Zach Strickland placing second at 197-pounds with a 2-1 record and Brandon Music finishing fourth at 125-pounds with a 5-2 mark.
In the Gold Division, Dan Crone and Tim Winker both placed second overall. Crone went 2-1 at 141-pounds while Winker was 3-1 at 197. Josh Zabel placed third at 184-pounds with a 5-2 mark while Andy Moore was fourth at 197-pounds with a 3-2 record. Two other wrestlers finished sixth for the Eagles. Jay Milz went 5-3 at 157-pounds to claim sixth while Brendan Faust was 2-3 at 184-pounds.
Ryan Farwell and Eric Seppelt each went 1-2 at 149-pounds in the Gold Division while Jeff Erkel was 1-2 at 165-pounds and Dan Schulte 1-2 at 174-pounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 17 at three different meets. The Eagles will send wrestlers to the Olivet College (Mich.) Duals, Auggie Open (Minn.) and Coe College Open (Iowa).
