UW-L Rewrites Record Book

La Crosse, Wis. – The UW-La Crosse softball team rewrote the record book in 2009 as the Eagles made their first appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament since 1986. UW-L went 34-12 overall and 12-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2009. The 34 victories set a school record, breaking the previous record of 27 set in 2001.

The Eagles also set single-season school records this year in batting average (.330), runs scored (282), hits (412), doubles (65) and runs batted in (244). The team had pitching records for saves (7) and strikeouts (240).

UW-L went 4-0 at the WIAC Tournament, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament with a 2-0 victory over UW-Superior. The Eagles, making their first appearance in the national tournament since 1986, fell 5-4 to Wartburg College (Iowa) and 5-3 to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in this year's regional.

Individually, Jenna Ahnen set school records for batting average (.478), runs (49), hits (64) and doubles (12). Heather Schultz set a UW-L record for pitching wins (16) while her and teammate Kaylyn Von Glahn had a school record 33 appearances.

Ahnen, Rachel Croak and Von Glahn were named to the 2009 All-WIAC First Team in a vote by league coaches while Katie Pietrowiak and Schultz were selected to the honorable mention squad. Ahnen was also named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Great Lakes Region First Team.

UW-L's Bergen Schaller was named to the All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team while Von Glahn was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division Softball Third Team. A biology major, Von Glahn maintained a 3.78 grade point average.
