UW-L Splits Doubleheader at St. Mary's

Winona, Minn. – The UW-La Crosse softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at St. Mary's University Sunday afternoon at Cotter Field. The Cardinals took the opener, 7-4, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 9-3. UW-L is now 16-9 on the season while St. Mary's is 7-13.
In the opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on Jenna Ahnen's solo home run. St. Mary's came right back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on Danielle Geske's two-run home run.
The Eagles tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on Rachel Weyer's RBI single scoring Mary Buvala, but the Cardinals tallied five times in the bottom of fifth. UW-L scored twice in the sixth on Cara Salm's two-run home run. Sarah Pfeifer scored on the home run after an opening inning double.
Sarah Fitzgerald picked up the win for St. Mary's, going 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two. Jenna Johnson recorded her first save, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Kaylyn Von Glahn suffered the loss for UW-L, going 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs (five earned) and two strikeouts. Shelly Monahan went 1.2 innings with a strikeout.
Emily Eggers finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Eagles while Weyer was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-L scored twice in the top of the as Pfeifer connected on a two-run home run. St. Mary's cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first, but UW-L led 3-1 in the third on Liz Bradley's solo home run. The Eagles added four runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Kim Pietrowiak had a run-scoring double, Jess Iwanski an RBI fielder's choice and Bradley a two-run triple.
Eggers had an RBI single in the fifth for a 8-1 lead and Bradley added another RBI single in the sixth. St. Mary's finished the scoring with runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Iwanski earned the win for the Eagles, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts. Bradley finished 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored while Ahnen was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.
UW-L returns to action Monday, April 14 hosting UW-Whitewater in a WIAC doubleheader at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
