UW-La Crosse Opens Season with Two Wins

La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse volleyball team opened its 2007 season with a pair of victories at the UW-L Invitational Friday night in Mitchell Hall.

The Eagles recorded their seventh straight season-opening win with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-18, 32-30) victory over Luther College (Iowa). UW-L then defeated the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) 3-0 (30-24, 30-20, 30-20) in its second match.

Versus Luther, UW-L’s Amber Schoonover led the way with 12 kills while adding nine digs. Brianne Stankus, a 2006 All-WIAC Honorable Mention selection, recorded 10 kills and 13 digs. Melannie Tate finished with 14 digs while Samantha Dries recorded 39 assists.

Stankus led the Eagles with 13 kills in the victory over the College of St. Benedict. She also had 11 digs and two blocks. Schoonover finished with 11 kills and a team-high 14 digs while Katelyn Carlson had 10 kills. Dries added 40 assists for the Eagles.

It was the first meeting between UW-L and St. Benedict since 1999.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, September 1 hosting Wartburg College (Iowa) at 10:30 a.m. in the second day of the UW-L Invitational. The Eagles will then play a final match at 12:30 p.m.
