UW-L Defeats Carthage; Falls to St. Thomas

La Crosse, Wis. The UW-La Crosse volleyball team, ranked 24th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), went 1-1 at its invitational Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall.
The Eagles, now 11-1 on the season, opened play Saturday with a 3-1 (30-20, 25-30, 31-29, 30-19) victory over sixth-ranked Carthage College (Wis.). UW-L then fell 3-2 (21-30, 30-27, 24-30, 30-24, 13-15) to ninth-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in its second match of the day.
Versus Carthage, Nina Walch and Katelyn Carlson each finished with 17 kills while Brianne Stankus had 12 and Amber Schoonover 11.
Melannie Tate led UW-L with 27 digs while Schoonover totaled 19. Stankus, Samantha Dries and Rosie Rislow each had 12. Dries added 53 assists.
UW-L hit .264 as a team, including .471 in the final game with 18 kills and two errors in 34 attempts.
Against St. Thomas, Walch led the way with 21 kills while Stankus finished with 17, Carlson 15 and Schoonover 10. Schoonover had 35 digs for the Eagles while Tate finished with 25, Stankus 24, Rislow 23 and Dries 19, who also recorded 54 assists.
UW-L hit .142 as a team.
Stankus and Walch were both named to the All-Tournament Team for the Eagles.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, September 19 at third-ranked UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
