What is a Sorority? Sororities provide an excellent opportunity for scholarship, community service, recreation, intellectual growth and leadership. They offer women the chance to grow and discover their strengths. The friendships you make will last a lifetime. A sorority is something better experienced that explained. "People seek the companionship of other people. We join together to perpetuate goals, share happiness, and comfort one another. We are attracted to another because of mutual interest, friendship, and personal values. Fraternal organizations provide a basis for lasting friendships." ~Alpha Xi Delta, The Bonds of Sisterhood "People ask me why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, and obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people. A sorority is giving without expecting in return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve all your problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help me take life one step at a time." ~ Author unknown
What Alpha Xi Delta has to offer... Academics and Scholarship Alpha Xi Delta believes strongly in academics and places a high value on the importance of being a student. Our sisters are required to uphold a minimum 2.5 GPA. Through sisterhood and the support and encouragement that you will find in Alpha Xi Delta, Fellow sisters help one another to live up to their full potential. Our Academic Chair also provides support through developing study plans and organizing study nights.
Since academics are an important part of our organization, our National Council honors their members with opportunities to apply for scholarships and grants through the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation. The Alpha Xi Delta Foundation offers many scholarships, and awards over $55,000 each year to undergraduate and alumnae members. The foundation was founded in 1956 and its mission is “to support Fraternity educational and leadership development programming; to provide and continue to expand scholarships, grants, and member support funds; and encourage philanthropy” Several of these scholarships have been awarded to current and past members of the Delta Alpha Chapter. Members from our Chapter have also assisted in achieving grants to send our members to national conferences, as well as to bring respected speakers to our campus. Realize Your Potential Alpha Xi Delta is also committed to a helping members build interpersonal skills since its founding. The Realize Your Potential program was created to foster ongoing intellectual and personal growth, thereby inspiring members to realize their potential. No matter what an Alpha Xi Delta sets out to do, success will depend on how she relates to the people she meets. Great leadership, at any level, evolves through effective relationships. Alpha Xi Delta's not only understand emotional intelligence but build skills across the dimensions of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Social Alpha Xi Delta offers many social activities and events throughout the semester. It is a great opportunity to meet other Greeks and students on campus. The social opportunities are what you make of them. Whether you are a shy person, or incredibly outgoing, everyone can find their place in the chapter. A sorority is a wonderful and unique way to meet life-long friends, not only within our chapter, but in the Greek community as well. Thursday Nights Every Thursday Night we meet for an hour for Sisterhood. A lot of us like to look at it as a hour away from academics and other troubles; a time to laugh and enjoy being with friends. The activities chair plans Thursday nights activities that have included facials, visits to guest speakers, arts and crafts, or just hanging out. Fraternities There are three fraternities on campus, including Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Tau Gamma, and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon colony. Each semester there is a planned activity or “social” that occurs solely between each one of the fraternities and our chapter. These events are quite affordable and sometime free, and have included events such as fundraising events, sledding Hawaiian luaus, cook-outs, and movie nights. Formal and Date Parties: Each semester we have one Formal, which is an event similar to prom, but without all the fuss! We usually end up getting ready together and dinner is served at the event. We also have date parties when you have the opportunity to bring a guest of your choice, whether it is your boyfriend, roommate, or good friend!
Philanthropy
Alpha Xi Delta is making a difference through the Choose Children Philanthropy Service Program. Since its start in 1992, Alpha Xi Delta chapters have given over 300,000 hours of service and donated over $700,000 to local agencies in their communities. Alpha Xi Delta Foundation has awarded over $150,000 to children's organizations across the nation.
Unlike many other Greek organizations, Alpha Xi Delta is not exclusively linked with one philanthropic organization. Alpha Xi Delta gives members the flexibility to look in their communities and decide how they can best benefit children. For some chapters, it's sponsoring a football tournament to raise money for a local organization; for others it's spending time tutoring children at an after-school program. Some chapters choose to work with children at a battered women's shelter, while others entertain patients in the pediatric wing of a hospital. No matter what activity a chapter, association or individual chooses, the impact that Alpha Xi Deltas have on children in their communities is unmatched. And the impact children have on Alpha Xi Deltas everywhere is immense! Throughout the years, our chapter has done many wonderful things for the community, such as participating in the Relay For Life Cancer Walk, chaperoning at the middle school Be Free From Tobacco Dance, adopting an elementary school, and volunteering at the YMCA, the Children's Museum, local schools, and the Red Cross. Currently, every Spring we open a lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer in support of Alex's Lemonade.
Did You Know? More than 7 million men and women in the USA and Canada are Greek. The Greek system is the largest network of volunteers in the US, with members donating over 10 million hours of volunteer service each year. Over $7 million is raised every year by Greeks nationally. Studies show that fraternity and sorority members are more likely to remain in college and obtain a degree than non-affiliated students. Less than 2% of an average college student's expenses go toward fraternity dues. (U.S. Office of Education) 1 st Female Senator was Greek 1 st Female Astronaut was Greek
