If you have already visited the “Faculty” page of the Department of Accountancy web site and if you graduated within the last 15 years, you certainly recognized some familiar faces.  These are the individuals who work tirelessly on your behalf to help maintain the excellent reputation of the accounting program at UW-La Crosse, your alma mater.  When you tell someone that you graduated from the UW-La Crosse accounting program we want you to hear that person say, “I’ve heard that it’s a great accounting program.”  We won’t let you down.  We will continue working diligently to attract the best students, improve our curriculum, maintain the highest standards, and provide the best opportunities for our graduating seniors.

Would you like to help maintain the accounting program’s excellent reputation?  Here are three things you can do.

1.  Reach your capabilities on the CPA Exam.  If you are a recent graduate who is considering sitting for the CPA Exam spend time doing an adequate review, either a self-study program or an organized review course such as BeckerConviser CPA Review.  There is no topic on the CPA Exam that was not covered in your undergraduate course work, but everyone needs to review the material and get ready for the format.  Set a goal of passing all four parts on your first sitting.  Accomplishing that goal will enhance the reputation of our program.  If you don’t attain that goal your efforts will, in all probability, still cause you to pass two parts and thus “condition.”  If you want to know more about any aspect of the CPA Exam, contact Professor Ken Winter.

 2.      Help current students start their careers.  Contact the UW-La Crosse Career Services office about employment or internship opportunities you may know about.  If your organization wishes to do on campus interviewing the Accounting Career Expo is October 1 and interview days are October 2 and 3 in 2001.  If you are interested in speaking to Beta Alpha Psi contact me.

 3.      Support the Department.  Scholarships attract quality students.  Our department is always looking for more dollars to support our students.  You might find it interesting that the accounting faculty teaches the BeckerConviser CPA Review course without compensation.  They donate their salaries to the Department of Accountancy Scholarship Fund.  If you wish to donate funds for accounting scholarships, send the funds to the UW-La Crosse Foundation with specific directions that the funds be used for one of the following: the Mark Jacobson Memorial Scholarship, the Sheryl Schultz Memorial Scholarship, or simply scholarships for accounting majors.  Contact me for information on our different scholarship programs.

 Good luck in your career.

 Ken Winter, Chairperson
 Department of Accountancy
