Welcome to the University Wisconsin La
Crosse Finance Page. Here you will find information on majors, classes, as
well as Professors in the Department. If you have questions or
concerns related to the field feel free to contact any one of the department Instructors.
The Finance Department at UW-La Crosse is
unique in many ways. The program provides a foundation in the primary financial
areas: corporate, investments, and money and capital markets. The program allows
a student flexibility to explore the basic areas in greater detail or to branch
out in other financial areas such as health care financing, international
finance, real estate, or risk and insurance. The department offers a finance
major with risk and insurance emphasis for those particularly interested in that
area.
The UW-La Crosse program includes a capstone course, usually taken during the
senior year, which gives students the opportunity to draw upon all of their
training in finance while working on realistic finance problems. In addition to
the traditional approach, which relies on lectures from a textbook, the Finance
Department includes case studies, current journal articles, and informational
services as resource materials. Students also have access to Dow Jones
Interactive and Zacks Analyst Watch, databases that contain current and
historical stock prices, financial statements, and other information on publicly
traded firms. Several courses include activities designed to expand student
Internet abilities. Students in investment courses manage simulated million
dollar portfolios. Students can take advantage of several internships that
provide both college credit and personal experience in the finance area.
In order to expand the flexibility in student programs, courses are imported
from other universities. Short-term financial management and commercial bank
management were recently taught by distance education. Principles of insurance
originates at UW-L and is taught through distance education to students at other
campuses.
