SHRM’s Important Reminders For human resources majors
When Registering For Classes
Required Classes:
MGT 303 (Principles of Labor-Management Relations) typically is offered in the fall (two sections), and in some years, one section is offered in the spring. It usually is offered during the summer.
MGT 305 (Business Law) is offered at least once per year, but the semester may vary from year to year. It usually is NOT offered in the summer.
MGT 385 (Human Resources: Employment) typically is offered both semesters. You should take this course your junior year, as it is a prerequisite for several other HR courses. It typically is offered during the summer.
MGT 386 (Compensation and Benefits Administration) typically is offered only in the fall (take fall of your senior year or J Term). Preq.: MGT 385. Offered only rarely during the summer.
MGT 486 (Human Resource Management Current Issues Seminar) is offered only in the spring. You should take this spring semester of your senior year. Preq.: MGT 385, MGT 386, MGT 303. As part of this course, you are required to take the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) exam (cost is $100). This is a difficult test, requiring considerable out-of-class study. However, passing it can help you get a better job.
Electives:
You must have either two Group I electives or one Group I and one Group II elective. (Note: Electives usually are not offered during the summer.)
Group I Electives
MGT 400 (Management Forum) is a topics class. Sometimes the topic is HR-related, and this class counts as an elective in the HR track. Offered only occasionally.
MGT 431 (Business, Labour and Human Rights) typically is offered once each year, but the semester in which it is offered varies. Preq.: MGT 303.
MGT 483 (Corporate Training) is offered during the spring semester of even-numbered years. Preq. MGT 385.
MGT 484 (International Human Resource Management) typically is offered once every two years. It often is offered during the spring. Preq.: MGT 385, MGT 386.
MGT 485 (Collective Bargaining) is offered every fall. Preq.: MGT 303, MGT 385.
Group II Electives
MGT 450 (Internship) or MGT 452 (International Internship) can be taken in either semester of your senior year, provided you (or Career Services) can locate a suitable HR-related internship (demand exceeds supply). You may have to relocate to do an internship. SHRM strongly recommends doing an internship. Offered summer, fall, and spring.
MGT 499 (Independent Study) can be taken either semester of your junior or senior year. It is highly recommended if you are considering attending graduate school. You are required to find a faculty member and decide on a research topic and project. Undergraduate research funds are available from a UW-L committee if you apply in February to do research during the summer or fall, so plan ahead! Offered fall, spring and summer.
