The River Studies Center organizes, coordinates, and presents continuing education programs to the scientific community and general public.

Conferences

International Conference on Rivers and Civilization: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Major River Basins. La Crosse, Wisconsin, June 25-28, 2006. The River Studies Center co-hosted this event, and several Center members served on the Planning Committee, including Ron Rada (Co-Chair), Rob Tyser and Jim Wiener. The conference was attended by 425 persons from 24 countries, and approximately 200 papers were presented. This conference was awarded the 2007 Exemplary Program Award by the University Continuing Education Association.

Eighth International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant. Madison, Wisconsin, USA, August 6-11, 2006. River Studies Center personnel involvement: Jim Wiener, Technical Chair, Conference Organizing Committee; Mark Sandheinrich, Program Committee, Student Awards Committee, Regional Planning Committee; and Kris Rolfhus, Regional Planning Committee and Under-Represented Groups Committee.

Mercury Conference

The conference was co-hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and the U.S. Geological Survey. It was attended by 1,116 persons from 48 countries and more than 1,000 papers were presented. Special conference issues will be published in each of the following journals: Ambio, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, Applied Geochemistry, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Pollution, and Environmental Research.

Workshops

An ongoing series of wetland-related workshops is sponsored by the River Studies Center (coordinated by Dr. D. Timothy Gerber and UW-La Crosse Continuing Education/Extension) in cooperation with several state and federal agencies, including the State of Wisconsin Department of Administration (Wisconsin Coastal Management Program), Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, U.S. Geological Survey, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Beginning and advanced wetland delineation and introductory plant identification workshops are offered to engineer, planners, scientists, resource managers, local and tribal officials as well as to other interested parties who deal with wetland delineation in Wisconsin. The workshops combine classroom instruction with field experiences taught by leading government experts in hydrology, vegetation, soils, and wetland policy. A Certificate of Completion and UW-Extension continuing education units are awarded to each participant upon successful completion of training sessions. Participants are added to a list of delineators provided to federal, state, and local officials.

Wetland delineation workshops are usually held at several locations in Wisconsin.
