This photo of a brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) clearly shows the distinctive violin-shaped dorsal stripe (with the neck of the violin pointing toward the abdomen) by which the spider is most easily recognized.  The abdomen is uniformly colored, but may range from a light tan to dark brown.
