Ticks are ectoparasites  that live on the blood of mammals, birds and even a few reptiles and amphibians. Although their bites can sometimes cause  a local reaction, the more serious problem is that they are are vectors of a number of serious diseases including Lyme disease, which is carried by the small deer tick (Ixodes).
