Travel Accident Insurance
This page describes the accident insurance policy for individuals who travel to foreign countries.
The Bureau of State Risk Management has purchased a MEDEX Traveler's Accident Insurance policy. The policy aids University of Wisconsin employees who may have a medical emergency arise while traveling in a foreign country on State business. This coverage includes employee, spouse, dependents, and students of the University if travel expenses are paid by a grant, contract or the University.
The policy provides 24 hour coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation in the event of a travel-related emergency. The policy also covers accidental loss of life, accidental dismemberment, paralysis, loss of use, and loss of sight, speech or hearing. Coverage is provided during business travel and provides benefits of $250,000 for accidental loss of life, accidental dismemberment according to a loss schedule, and evacuation and repatriation up to $50,000. In addition, the policy provides emergency travel assistance through the MEDEX worldwide network.
All of this is covered, subject to the policy, at no cost to the individual traveler or their department. The premium has been paid by the Department of Administration. There is no special enrollment, except that the International Education Office should retain a record of the travelers who use this insurance.
MEDEX has furnished the University with the identification card that you have received with this letter. The card provides an explanation of benefits and phone number for covered individuals to call in the event of a medical emergency.
MEDEX has also provided the University with brochures describing their SAFE Trip travel program for individuals not covered by this State policy. While the State policy is provided to covered individuals at no cost, a premium exists for individuals who apply for the SAFE Trip policy. Brochures describing the SAFE Trip travel program are available through the International Education Office in 116 Graff Main Hall.
