DAVID M. BRIGGS
Hometown:
Colgate, WI
UW-L Major/Minor:
English: Rhetoric and Writing Major / Creative Writing Minor
Future Goals/Aspirations:
People ask me what I want to do with my life. I tell them,
"Everything." Then they clarify and ask me what I want to do
with my degree. I tell them, "Everything." Then they clarify
further and ask me what I want to do as a career. I tell them,
"Everything."
Favorite Activity/Hobby:
I love reading, I love watching movies, I love playing video
games, I love writing, and I love talking about all four of
those things to everybody. But I also really love playing music
and singing, and that is what restores me after literally
anything.
Words to Live By:
"The effect of words upon the condition of the soul is
comparable to the power of drugs over the nature of bodies. For
just as different drugs dispel different things from the body,
and some bring an end to disease and others to life, so also in
the case of words, some distress, others delight, some cause
fear, others make the hearers bold, and some drug and bewitch
the soul with a kind of evil persuasion."
-Gorgias, slightly paraphrased from "Encomium of Helen"
Favorite ATP Memory:
Every one of those times when we would nail something perfectly,
like the first times we finally fit the Step together or after
the performances, that feeling of just wanting to scream in
triumph and hug and high five everyone. That's what I'll always
remember.
When I think of Awareness through Performance, I think of...
Constantly improving, constantly working, knowing never to rest
because the job will never be done, but also knowing to
celebrate the victories along the way.
Involvement with ATP has had this impact on me:
It's taught me a lot about working with a group in so many
different ways. I've never written with a group like this
before, nor been so completely and yet collaboratively in
control of things like this. It's so cool, and something I never
thought I'd do.
