GUILIN, THE BEAUTIFUL

Guilin is situated in the northeastern corner of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, having a sub-tropical mild climate which is eulogized in many ancient poems for its ¡°infrequent snow in winters¡±, ¡° its blooming flowers throughout the year¡±, and ¡°its pleasantest weather in the Five-Ridge area¡±. Guilin¡¯s beautiful scenery, featuring ¡°green hills, crystal-clear waters, fantastic caves and spectacular rocks¡±, has been reputed as ¡°being matchless under the heaven¡±. Guilin, a natural wonder in the world and an ancient city with a rich culture dating back to 2,100 years ago, is one of the seven major tourist cities in China, a vacationing resort of world renown and one of the twenty-four famous historical cities in China, where are to be found over 117 places with important cultural relics. The local dialect belongs to the Northern Languages/Dialects (Bei Fang Fang Yan) which include Beijing Dialect and on which the Standard Mandarin (Pu Tong Hua) is based as the official language of China.

A Survey of Guangxi Normal University

    Located in the City of Guilin, Guangxi Normal University, with its long history of educational endeavors, is a key normal university at the provincial level, which combines basic and applied disciplines of liberal arts and natural sciences, teachers-training and non-teachers-training programs, and offers multi-education with courses in their varieties.

    The University was formed on the basis of Guangxi Provincial Teachers Training School founded on October 12, 1932. It has set up 12 colleges, 24 teaching departments and 4 independent teaching units/departments which offer 46 majors of undergraduate programs and are authorized to confer Master¡¯s Degree in 21 disciplines. Besides, the University is one of the 16 institutions of higher learning in China authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education to grant Master¡¯s Degree in Education. The discipline of the Chinese Language and Literature in the University is one of 49 in China established as the National Base for Training and Research in Humanities. The University now has over 2000 staff and faculty members, among whom are over 100 professors and nearly 300 associate professors. At present Guangxi Normal University has a total number of over 30,000 students, among whom are 15,000 full-time undergraduate students at school, more than 1,600 graduate students working on Diploma and Master¡¯s Degree in the various branches of learning, and over 14,000 students undertaking continued education in various areas. In addition, the University has also attached to it an experimental base for pre-school education, a high school and an experimental foreign language high school.

    The University has also established 17 independent scientific research institutes, 7 training and research centers, 68 science laboratories and 16 language laboratories, equipped with more than 4,080 kinds of advanced facilities and instruments for teaching and research. Its library houses 1.7 million volumes of books, supplemented with more than 5,000 periodicals in Chinese and around 1,000 in foreign languages. The University Press, the University Journal Department and the University Periodicals Department enjoy good reputation both in the region and the country for their publications. The books, periodicals and academic journals such as Oriental Literary Series, Guangxi Normal University Journal, etc. are distributed domestically and internationally. Besides, it also runs 9 industrial enterprises involving in such businesses as publishing, printing, electronic products, chemicals, zoo-pharmaceuticals, bio-products, arts and crafts, decorations and tourism service.

    The University is an institution which attaches importance to both teaching and research. It presently undertakes 22 categories of scientific research projects set by the State, ministries and commissions, and region. In recent years, approximately 400 books and textbooks have come off the press and around 3,000 academic papers have been published at home and abroad, 4 of which won national awards, 120 provincial and ministerial awards, and 230 other awards.    

    The University is granted the authority to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. It has taken the initiative in promoting international academic exchanges, being one of the earliest since the implementation of the opening and reform policy in China to reenroll international students and to invite foreign experts and teachers to work in the University. Since 1980, it has established intercollegiate relations with around 40 institutions of higher learning in the United States, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, New Zealand, etc. The University¡¯s Center of International Education Exchanges, Center of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Office of Chinese Proficiency Test are handling the teaching affairs for international students. So far, the Center of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of History and Information, the Department of Pedagogics, the Department of Economics, the Department of Physical Culture, the Department of Art and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures have received about 900 students from 20 foreign countries, and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan for Master¡¯s Degree programs, undergraduate programs, and long & short-term training programs in Chinese language and culture. 

The University occupies an area of 72 hectares, with a floor space of 300,000 square meters divided into 2 campuses. The downtown campus is located at the former site of Jingjiang Princes¡¯ Mansion of the Ming Dynasty in the city center of Guilin. It is a historic place with its authentic Ming architecture protected by the State, where Duxiu Hill stands abruptly from the ground in the middle of the campus. The other campus is in Sanlidian Hi-tech Development Zone. On the campuses there are to be found gymnasiums and athletic grounds, a botanical garden, and a museum of folk customs. In recent years, new building complexes have sprung up to give the University a new and pleasant look.

                  APLLICATION AND ADMISSION

                 FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

 

Qualifications for Admission

1.  Undergraduate Programs: An applicant should have an academic record equivalent to Chinese high-school graduate. One majoring in Chinese Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy must be a holder of HSK Certificate Intermediate Level C (Level 6); one majoring in other disciplines, including Chinese Language, must be a holder of HSK Certificate Elementary Level C (Level 3).

2.  Graduate Programs: An applicant should have qualification of a undergraduate, under 35 years old, recommended by 2 associate professors or professors, and has obtained the Certificate of HSK Intermediate Level A (Level 8).

3.  Long/Short-term Chinese Language and Culture Programs: No qualification is required.

      Notes: The validity of the HSK Certificate is 2 years from the date of issuance.

 

APPLICATION

    An applicant can apply for admission directly to the Office of International Exchanges of Guangxi Normal University, and mail the following documents to the Office 1 to 4 months before starting the program.

1.  The completed Application Form for International Student issued by Guangxi Normal University.

2.  An eligible Medical Examination Form for Foreigners completed and signed by a medical doctor or by a licensed hospital.

3.  A Xeroxed copy of his/her passport and 8 passport photos.

4.  An applicant for an undergraduate program or graduate program should in addition submit the following documents:

  1) The HSK Certificate as required above.

  2) A xeroxed copy of his or her certification.

  3) 2 letters of recommendation by associate professors or professors for an applicant to undertake a graduate program.

 

ENTRY VISA

An overseas student can apply for a student visa (X Visa) from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate closest to his or her locality by presenting the Admission Notice, JW202 Form (the visa application form for foreigners who wish to study in China) and the Medical Examination Form for Foreigners mailed to him or her by Guangxi Normal University. For one who wishes to study for shorter than 6 months, he or she may apply for a visitor¡¯s visa (F Visa).

(II) Short-term Programs (Class size: 5 to 10 students / each class;

                                16-18 class hours/per week)

1.       4 weeks: $200USD + $30USD registration fee/per person

2.       8 weeks: $400USD + $30USD registration fee/per person

3.       12 weeks: $600USD + $30USD registration fee/per person

4.       16 weeks: $800USD + $30USD registration fee/per person

 

(III) Study-tour Program (Group of over 10 people)

1. One-week:       USD70 program fee + USD160 tours / per person

1.   Two-week: USD130 program fee + USD220 tours / per person

2.   Three-week: USD180 program fee + USD280 tours / per person

1. For those engaged in Art, Physical Education or Sciences, tuition is 40% higher 

2. For one-to-one instruction/teaching program, tuition is doubled.
