Commencement day information for faculty & staff

As attending faculty, we ask that you wear your academic regalia. Should you need to acquire a robe, please contact the University Bookstore.

For those participating in the commencement ceremonies:

Faculty & staff in attendance:

  • Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.
  • Proceed to the north side of the La Crosse Center and enter under the La Crosse Center logo.  Once inside, proceed straight ahead to the stairwell to go down to North Hall.
  • Faculty marshals and commencement staff will give you further instruction that day.
  • Coat racks will be available.
  • The North Hall Lobby is not a secure area – please refrain from bringing any valuables.
  • Attn: Graduate Faculty participating in the Hooding Ceremony—Please arrive by 9:15 a.m. to the ceremony and report to the Ballroom to hood graduate students.

Parking (Public):

 Dress:

  • Please wear your academic regalia for the ceremony.
  • CASSH and CSH Dean’s Office both have extra regalia that can be borrowed if you do not have your own.
  • Masks are optional at the ceremony.

 Ceremony:

  • Faculty in attendance will line up approximately 10 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony in two lines shoulder to shoulder. You will be the first to enter the arena.
  • You will be led by the lead Faculty Marshal into the arena where you will separate with one line on each side of the aisle.
  •  The graduating students are ushered in between the lines of faculty, which provide an opportunity for faculty to greet the students. You are not expected to greet/shake hands with each student. The objective is to give faculty who know particular students an opportunity to exchange greetings. The challenge is to keep the student processional line moving along.
  • As soon as the last student has passed, a Faculty Marshal will lead the group to the faculty seating area to the left of student seating. Please remain in two lines as much as possible and walk QUICKLY.
  • You will be seated in the faculty section starting with the first rows and working your way to the top.  Should you wish to specifically sit in the first row, please find the Faculty Marshals in the North Hall Lobby and let them know.
  • When the ceremony has ended, the lead Faculty Marshal leads faculty out of the arena, following the Platform Party, down the center aisle.

Student Apparel

  • The University Bookstore has an exclusivity contract with Follett to sell graduation regalia. Departments and offices who wish to offer special graduate apparel should contact Kelly Proksch.
