Declaration
requirements and procedures
Thinking of Declaring the Major?Need help deciding whether Communication Studies is the major you want to declare? You're invited to meet with a faculty advisor at any time to ask questions and explore various options. If you're thinking of declaring the major, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible in order to establish a plan of study. Program Options : Majors and MinorsThe department has programs leading to the B.A. and B.S. For detailed information about each of these options, see our degree programs. If you have any questions, or if you need help deciding which option is for you, make an appointment with your faculty advisor. You can also stop by and sign up for an advising appointment during registration. A schedule is posted right outside each advisor's office door. Declaration Requirements and ProceduresCriteria For Declaring a major in Communication StudiesPre-majors: Once you have been admitted to UW La Crosse through the Admissions Office, you may declare as a pre-CST major in Communication Studies. It is to your best advantage to declare the pre-CST major as soon as possible in order to establish a plan of study, gain access to classes during the first phase of registration, and receive important information from your advisor in the department. Majors: Upon completion of a minimum of 45 semester credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.50, including courses taken at other institutions; Completing CST 110, ENG 110 and CST 190 (or equivalent courses transferred from other institutions), each with a final grade of B or better, you may declare a Communication Studies major in the emphasis of your choice. See your faculty advisor to complete the paperwork to declare your major. Information for MinorsFour different minors are available: Interpersonal, Persuasion and Public Communication, Public Relations and Organizational Communication, and Telecommunication. See Communication Studies Minors. To declare a minor, go to your college dean's office and ask to complete a "change of minor" form. Applying for GraduationWhen to apply for graduationPlan to apply for graduation at least one semester prior to your semester. For example, if you're graduating in the Spring, you'll need to apply for graduation during the Fall. How to apply for graduationMake an appointment with an advisor in the College of Liberal Studies to do a credit check. Plan to do this well in advance of registration. Plan to bring a copy of your SNAP so your coursework can be evaluated (unofficial is fine, off the web). The final step will be to turn in your intent to graduate form. These forms are available in the College of Liberal Studies. Considering Graduate School? For information, see Considering Graduate School in the Career Options section of this site.
