Questions About Career Options in Communication StudiesQuestions About Graduate SchoolQuestions About My Faculty AdvisorHow do I know who my faculty advisor is? You can check to see who your faculty advisor is through Talon or go to the Dean's Office. When am I supposed to meet with my faculty advisor? You should meet with your faculty advisor before you register for courses each semester. Although you receive your SNAP in your student email account, you should still see your advisor each semester to make sure you meet prerequisites and take courses in the proper sequence.Questions About Transferring Courses to UW La CrosseIf I'm transferring from another university with a Gen Ed speech course, will this satisfy the introductory course (CST 110) requirement at UW La Crosse? You should make an appointment with the Chair of the Communication Studies Department and bring a copy of the syllabus from the other university. If the course is similar to the one taught at UW-L, the Gen Ed course from another university can be transferred as CST 110. If I'm transferring with a Communication Studies course from another university, will this course satisfy a Department requirement at UW La Crosse? You should make an appointment with the Chair of the Communication Studies Department and bring a copy of the syllabus from the other university. If the course is similar to the one taught at UW-L, the Communication Studies course from another university can be transferred as the equivalent CST course. Questions About Declaring the Pre-Major and Major in Communication Studies What are the requirements for declaring the pre-CST? There are no requirements for declaring a pre-CST major. However, CST 110 and CST 190 are prerequisites for most CST courses, so those two courses should be taken early in your college career. How do I go about declaring a major in Communication Studies? In order to declare a CST major, you must meet the following requirements: Complete a minimum of 45 semester credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.50, including courses taken at other institutions. Complete CST 110, ENG 110 and CST 190 (or equivalent courses transferred from other institutions), each with a final grade of B or better. Students who have fulfilled these requirements must see the Department of Communication Studies chairperson or a CST faculty adviser to obtain approval to declare the major. A current study copy of your transcript or SNAP report must be submitted to document fulfillment of admission requirements. Upon meeting the requirements, you should choose an emphasis area--Interpersonal Communication, Persuasion and Public Communication, Public Relations and Organizational Communication, or Telecommunication. The approval form must be submitted by the student to the Office of the Dean of the College of Liberal Studies. What if I do not meet one or more of the minimum requirements? If you do not meet one of the above requirements, you may submit a formal appeal. The appeal should be in the form of a persuasive business-type letter addressed to the Executive Committee in Communication Studies. Work with your faculty advisor to make a strong argument why you should be accepted as a major without meeting all of the requirements. Questions About Minors in Communication StudiesHow do I declare a minor in Communication Studies? In order to declare a minor in Communication Studies, you need to go to your college Dean's office and complete a "change of program" form. There are no minimum requirements for declaring a minor in Communication Studies. However, you should chose an emphasis area--Interpersonal Communication, Persuasion and Public Communication, Public Relations and Organizational Communication, or Telecommunication. Questions About Registration/Overrides for ClassesWhat if the class I want is filled? Can I get an override? Each instructor in Communication Studies handles overrides differently. You should contact the instructor of the course to determine the appropriate method for obtaining an override. How do I register for classes that require permission? Some courses, such as CST 291, CST 391, CST 399, and CST 450 require instructor consent and you cannot register for those courses online. If you are interested in a course that requires permission, you can pick up the course override form and instructions in the main office (346 Center for the Arts), or talk to a Communication Studies faculty member about the process. Can I earn CST credits while doing an internship? Yes. The requirements for obtaining an internship for credit are you must be a senior Communication Studies major with at least 24 CST credits. If you do not meet these prerequisites, you can still do an internship, but take CST 291 or CST 391 credit instead of the CST 450 credit for an internship. How do I register for an Internship in Communication Studies? The following link gives all of the steps to obtain an internship for credit. This is an example of a course that you cannot register for online, but need to get signatures from your faculty supervisor and the department Internship Director before registering for CST 450.
