  Students who major in Communication Studies may select a scholarly interest area from one of the four offered by our department:

The Department of Communication Studies incorporates a significant amount of writing throughout the required courses instead of identifying particular courses as writing emphasis courses. Students who complete a CST major will fulfill the university writing emphasis requirement.

The Communication Studies Department offers four minors:

Communication Studies Minors
(All colleges, excluding Teacher Certification programs)

Each minor is a 24 credit hour program

Interpersonal Communication Minor
Required courses: CST 190, 230, 332 or 334, 336, and 430.

Elective courses (at least nine credits from the following): CST 232, 250 (or PSY 343 or SOC 334), 351, 290, 291, 300, 330, 332, 334, 354, 399, 400, 412, 491, PSY 341, REC 430.

No more than three credits of the minimum 24 credit total may be earned in courses offered by departments other than CST.

Public Relations and Organizational Communication Minor
Required courses: CST 190, 260, 350, 360, 452 or 460.

Elective courses (at least nine credits from the following): CST 230, 250, 351, 290, 291, 300, 354, 362, 370, 399, 400, 412, 452 or 460, 491.

Students may not use same courses to fulfill requirements and electives.


Persuasion and Public Communication Minor
Required courses: CST 190, 310, 315, 412, 415.

Elective courses (at least nine credits from the following): CST 210, 260, 290, 291, 300, 360, 399, 400, 410, 491, ANT 350, POL 304, 307, 326, 329, PSY 320, 436.

No more than three credits of the minimum 24 credit total may be earned in courses offered by departments other than CST.


Telecommunication Minor
Required courses: CST 190, 170, 272, 274, 275, 370 or 375, 471 or 480.

Elective courses (at least five credits from the following): CST 270, 273, 290, 291, 300, 370, 371, 372, 374, 375 376, 399, 400, 471, 472, 474, 480, 491, ENG 325, POL 304, THA 340.

No more than three credits of the minimum 24 credit total may be earned in courses offered by departments other than CST. Students may not use same courses to fulfill requirements and electives.
