CST Research

Several faculty members and students presented research at the Central States Communication Association Convention in Milwaukee, April 4-7.  Authors and their research include:

Linda Dickmeyer and Rick Rodrick presented "Inquiry and knowledge creation as outcomes of undergraduate research." Students presenting research on this panel included: Maria Burman, Kim Pape, Christa Peters, and Trina Wolosek.  The chair of the panel was Doug Swanson.

Another panel featured several faculty from the CST department, including: Scott Dickmeyer, "It's all about the audience stupid!: Basing public relations campaigns on our communication studies story"; Ronda Knox and Linda Dickmeyer, "Integrating professional and social experiences in a student organization"; Doug Swanson, "Stories of 'experiential learning' in a professional context"; and Rick Rodrick, "Students to scholars: Developing students' professional story through the 'senior project.'"

Michael Tollefson, Laura Nelson, and Rick Rodrick presented "NATO press conferences during the bombing of Kosovo: Rhetorical strategies of definition."

Several students from last semester's Family Communication class made presentations.  They include Sara Bailey, Christine Williams, Anne Lindberg, and Kimberly Drebenstedt.

In other research news, Doug Swanson recently completed an editing project for MacMillan press.  He edited the next edition of the entry-level PR text Public Relations: The Practice and the Profession.  The text is due out in 2003.

Scott Dickmeyer, Ronda Knox, Rick Rodrick, and Doug Swanson have applied for a teaching development grant to evaluate and update the curriculum in CST 360 (Public Relations).  They hope to streamline the course, add more online content, and integrate a new textbook and additional electronic materials into the curriculum.

Michael Tollefson with co-authors Mike Allen, et al. published the article "Effect of timing of communicator identification and level of source credibility on attitude" in Communication Research Reports.  The journal will also print Rick Rodrick and Ronda Knox's article "Information seeking among organizational members."

Who's Who?

Two Communication Studies faculty members were included in the seventh edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2002.  Congratulations to Ronda Knox and Cheri Niedzwiecki!

Here to Stay

Congratulations to Scott Dickmeyer who was hired in a tenure track position for next year!

Donation

The Communication Club donated a printer to the Communication Resource Center this semester.

Communication Club Corner

The Communication Club raised $965 for Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Bowl for Kids' Sake charity event.

The Communication Club has several events planned for the remainder of the semester.

On April 9 the Club will participate in a Photo Scavenger Hunt.  If you are interested in participating, sign up for an hour time slot on the Communication Club bulletin board between the trophy cases on the third floor of the Arts building.

The scavenger hunt is sponsored by the College of Liberal Studies.  The Communication Club and Lambda Pi Eta are seeking to get as many persons involved as possible.  The team that wins the event will earn $100 in prizes for its student organization.

On April 10 at 5:30 in 340 Arts the Club will meet to elect new officers.  Five positions are available: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Social Director.

The Club will hold a spring cookout on April 24 at 5:00 p.m. in
Myrick Park. More importantly, the event will include a white elephant exchange (bring a used gift, not a new one, or you will make everyone else look bad).  Bring a (new) dish to pass.

The annual Communication Department awards banquet is scheduled for May 10 in Valhalla.  Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the awards presentation and Glenn Comeau retirement celebration will start at 7:30.  The dance will last from 8:30 until 11:30.  Tickets are now available in the Communication Studies office for $10 (the Communication Club member price is $8).  May 3 is the last day to purchase a ticket.  All department majors and minors are welcome to attend.
