International Study Experience

The overall purpose of the Canadian International Study Experience is to foster health-related insights and linkages between the United States and Canada. Health promotion practices in Canada have been legendary. The population-based health enhancement focus was initiated nationwide during the early 1970’s under the leadership of then Minister of Health and Welfare, Marc Lalonde and was referred to as a New Perspective on the Health of Canadians. Particularly, based on the success of that national initiative, the United States developed its first systematic health improvement initiative in 1979, eventually titled, Healthy People. Canada’s universal health insurance inspired reformers in the U.S. health care system. The Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination (1979) influenced the U.S.’s first Guide to Clinical Preventive Services (1989), wherein over half of the 169 interventions recommended were related to patient counseling for health promotion and self-care. The U.S. has a very substantial commitment within its public health system to health promotion, thanks, in part, to the Canadian Lalonde Report which influenced the priorities on the environment, lifestyle and health services in the first U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (1979). Bilateral discussions in 1980 contributed to comparable questions in Canada’s first Health Promotion Survey and the first comprehensive set of social and behavioral measures in the U.S. National Health Interview Survey. These early initiatives aligned the official policies and documents of the two countries. As one example, a model developed by Canadians in the mid-1990s (Advisory Committee on Cancer Control, 1994) formulated new strategies for cancer control research adopted in the U.S. at the turn of the Century. This synergistic interaction continues as health promotion evolves in both countries toward greater emphasis on dissemination and implementation of research and practice with leadership from the Canadian Institute for Health services, NCIC, and the Canadian Heart Foundation. The Canadian International Study Experience draws from a rich tradition of health promotion and public health innovation and collaboration in advancing health-related research and practices.

International Study Experience Goals:

  • To provide an overview of the public health and health care systems offered in Canada
  • To compare and contrast the Canadian health care and public health systems with the systems of health care delivery and public health delivery in other countries
  • To provide an overview of health promotion and population health strategies (related to the leading causes of death) for health enhancement in Canada
  • To compare the Canadian experience in implementing health promotion strategies with the principles and theories on which they are based
  • To connect participants with key cultural aspects of Canada that have health-related impacts
  • To align participants, where possible, with salient experiences or observations based on their needs/interests

Enrollment is Limited. Make sure to register early.

NOTE: Transportation expenses before the start of the study experience (July 17th) in Montreal and the return home from Victoria at the end of the journey (July 23rd) are to be underwritten by the participants since they will be arriving from across the United States and potentially from other countries, as well. Other study experience travel, all lodging, and most meal expenses during July 17-23 are covered through the registration fee. A valid passport is required for entrance into Canada.

  • Base Study Tour Fee: includes air travel in Canada, Tour-related travel within Canada, lodging, selected meals, entrance fees in Canada, and 3.2 Continuing Education Units (Credit card payments have an additional 3% processing charge.):
    • $2995, Early Registration period postmarked by April 1, 2011. (Minimum amount due is $900 non-refundable deposit for pre-purchase of in-country transportation; remainder is due by 4 p.m. CST, April 29, 2011.) After April 29, 2011, total registration fee is not refundable.
    • $3095, Regular Registration period postmarked by April 2-29, 2011. (Minimum amount due is $900 non-refundable deposit for pre-purchase of in-country transportation; remainder is due by 4 p.m. CST, April 29, 2011.) After April 29, 2011, total registration fee is not refundable.
  • 18 Category I CECHs for Certified Health Educators available for an additional $36

Credit* Options in addition to Base Study Tour fee:

  • 18 Category I CECHs for Certified Health Educators available for an additional $36.
  • 2 Academic Credits* available at undergraduate (HED 495 Section 790 ) or graduate level (HED 595, Section 790) for additional 2-credit* tuition fee (Contact Continuing Education Registration for tuition fee information).
    This will include the development of an experience-based paper. NOTE: Only one credit option may be selected (i.e., 3.2 CEUs; 18 CECHs; or 2 Academic Credits*.)

*A $15 Registration Fee/semester and a $2/credit D2L (Desire2Learn) Fee is assessed to all undergraduate and graduate students each semester.

The tuition plateau does not apply to students enrolling in undergraduate or graduate credit courses through the  Office of Continuing Education and Extension.

Picture of Dr. Gary Gilmore.Since 1974, Dr. Gary Gilmore has held a joint appointment with the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. He is Professor and Director of Graduate Community Health Programs. His prior experiences were in public health and preventive medicine at the Bergen County Health Department (N.J.), and at the Preventive Medicine Unit, General Leonard Wood Hospital, U.S. Army (recipient of the Army Commendation Medal in Preventive Medicine). His training in epidemiology and public health is through the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, with additional training in epidemiology at the New England Epidemiology Institute, Tufts University. He is the founding and continuing Director of the first Master of Public Health Program (CEPH accredited since 1992) offered in the University of Wisconsin System. More...

Picture of Dr. Lawrence Green.Dr. Lawrence W. Green is Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Medicine and Co-Leader of the Society, Diversity and Disparities Program in the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California at San Francisco. His international credentials in health education began early in his career with two-years in Bangladesh where he conducted research and training on family planning in the 1960s. As the first and only health educator on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 1970, he established graduate degree and postdoctoral programs and trained many of today’s leaders in health promotion in the U.S. and around the world, including a school of public health dean, directors of federal agencies, and heads of programs at several leading schools of public health.
