'Hear, Here' project possibly coming to downtown La
New history course will document personal tales in downtown La Crosse ~ UW-L Campus, April 17, 2014
Are you interested in the history of La Crosse? Do the voices and experiences of the average person intrigue you? Would you like to know the local stories that go untold or unnoticed in the formal history of our community?
If so, please join us for project: HEAR, HERE, and help create a powerful and living example of local history in our community. UW-L Continuing Education and Extension, Department of History and the WI Council for the Social Studies are collaborating to offer this unique opportunity to community members. History Assistant Professor, Dr. Ariel Beaujot, will present an engaging and innovative approach to teaching public history through two courses offered in fall 2014 and spring 2015. Participants will gather and compile local, personal stories associated with geographic points in the city and make audio recordings available to passersby who happen upon those locales.
In part one of the project, History 393: Material Culture, participants will learn the theory and develop pre-professional expertise in the many skills required to create this type of project including:
- Value of telling the history of the average citizen and its relationship to the history of the community as a whole
- Importance of location-based history
- Identifying interviewees and researching their backgrounds
- Learn and implement effective interview techniques
- Compile and edit and interview material
In part two of the project, History 403: Exhibition Planning and Development, participants will collaborate to design and curate the final product including:
- Developing and uploading a project website and phone system
- Creating and installing street level signs
- Learning and conducting public relations practices to enhance community awareness of project
Participants should plan to take both courses in order to see the project from start to finish. While the fall course may be taken by itself, the spring course may not be taken unless the fall course has been completed. Registration for History 403, spring 2015 will open November, 2014. Specific dates TBD.
