OFF-Campus Cohort Programs

What's New?

Thank You for Your Interest in Our Off-Campus Graduate Programs In Exercise and Sport Science:

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHING AND SPORT ADMINISTRATION

Do you want to pursue a Master’s Degree in PE Teaching or Sport Administration?  Are you interested in one or both but not sure you’re ready to commit to a specific program?  Is your teaching license close to renewal and you need credits? If you answered yes to any of these questions, take a look at our course offerings.

Up to 9 credits may be taken through UWL before being accepted to either program by enrolling as a special student. If you are interested in doing this, please contact: Briana Meuer, 608-785-6513 or bmeuer@uwlax.edu.

If you are considering one of the graduate programs, please note that the next three year rotations are planned to begin in fall 2012 with both programs also located at Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. Rotations will start if each program enrolls a minimum of 15 students to constitute a cohort. If you wish to follow this route, please submit your application for graduate school online at: http://apps22.uwex.edu/pls/ea/Apply.Graduate?src=APPLY&uw=LAC

About the Program

What is a Cohort Group?

A cohort group brings together 15 students who enroll together, work through the curriculum together and graduate together. UW-La Crosse reserves the right to cancel courses due to low enrollment. Cohorts have become more and more popular at many universities because of their benefits, such as:
  • Personalized attention of a small college network but with the resources of a major university.
  • Opportunities to collaborate, learn and grow with people who have similar professional goals.
  • Build friendships and create professional and personal networks.
  • And, studies show that students who enroll in collaborative learning environments are more likely than their peers to graduate.

When and Where do Cohorts Meet?

Locations for cohort rotations are determined based on requests from potential students, accessibility of location and appropriateness of site. Our locations are posted to our Web site once they are determined.

Not only do our convenient locations make it easier for you to earn your master's degree, but the class times permit you to maintain your career and personal life. A cohort rotation is set up to allow students to graduate in three years. Classes are held in the evenings and/or on the weekends. Although the course curriculum has been scheduled to move students through the program in three years you may take up to seven years to complete your graduate degree.

The following guidelines may help you decide whether this program is for you.

Courses

  • Students admitted to the cohort group must agree to take classes in the sequence they are offered. Each class is offered only once or twice in a three-year rotation.
  • Students in the cohort group who do not take classes in the sequence will be responsible for completing the course at the UW-L campus.
  • Students in the cohort group must take at least one class per semester. Students will be dropped from the cohort group if they fail to complete two required courses at their site.
  • During the summer, students will be required to take an elective AND a required course. This will allow students to complete the program and stay on target for graduation.

Registration:

  • Students enrolled in the cohort will be allowed to pre-register in advance of regular registration. Students in the cohort group who do not pre-register will NOT be guaranteed a seat in class. Any open seat will be available during regular registration periods for students not in the cohort group. UW-L expects to have four extra seats for most classes offered for students who are not part of the cohort groups.
  • To ensure the integrity of the program, overrides will not be offered when enrollment limits have been met.
  • UW-La Crosse reserves the right to cancel courses due to low enrollment.

Rigor

  • Both programs are research-based. Students should expect to spend quality time in their local library and use of the Internet to meet class requirements.
