Frequently Asked Questions:

Attendance

  • 100% attendance is expected; absences can affect grades – If you miss 2 required classes in the program, you will be dropped from the cohort.
  • What if I'm a head coach and my team is competing at the state tournament/meet during a scheduled class?
Most instructors understand this conflict and will work out a solution with you to make up the hours and work. However, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor to see if alternate arrangements may be made. If you perceive that arrangements are not possible, you may need to take the course at UW-L during a summer session or during the next rotation. Allowance will be made only for head coaches of teams that are competing in the tournament/meet.

Registration

  • If I'm either a new or continuing cohort member, am I guaranteed a spot in class?
Students who are members of either cohort group will be guaranteed a spot until the first day of open registration by calling Karen Hansen at 608.785.6513 and paying the $100 deposit using a credit card.
  • If I'm in a cohort and fail to register before the first day of open registration, am I guaranteed a spot in class?
No. On the first day of open registration students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • How can I pay with a credit card if I want to use TALON registration?
If you are in the cohort and want to be assured a spot in a class, we encourage you to call Karen Hansen before open registration and be prepared to pay your $100 deposit with a credit card. Once open registration begins, any student who is accepted into graduate school may register using the TALON system and pay by credit card. Have your I.D. and PIN ready and go to www.uwlax.edu, select “Current Students” and follow prompts to pay bill electronically. Contact the cashier's office at 608.785.8719 if you have questions.
  • No Overrides will be offered for courses when enrollments have been met.

Courses

  • Course Sequence:
Students admitted to the cohort must agree to take classes in sequence they are offered. Each class is offered only once in a three year rotation. Students who do not take the courses in the sequence they are offered will be responsible for completing the courses at UW-L.
  • Frequency of Enrollment:
Students in the cohort must take at least one class per semester. In summer, students are required to take and elective AND a required course; this will keep students on target for graduation.
  • Course Rigor:
UW-L’s master’s program is research based. Students should expect to spend quality time in their local library as well as using the Internet to meet class requirements.
  • Can I take electives at a location other than the site of my rotation?
Yes, as long as the course is a “pre-approved” elective. Students must contact their program director in advance to check if an elective is pre-approved.
    • Elective courses in one program cannot be substituted for elective courses in the other program.
    • Up to 9 credits from outside UWL may be transferred in upon the approval of the program director.
  • I need to take a class on the UW-L campus during the summer; may I stay in the dorms?
Yes, contact Paul Rifkin at 608.785.8075 or rifkin.paul@uwlax.edu for fees and registration information.
  • May students enrolled in UW-L classes receive state rates at area motels?
Some motels will allow a certain number of rooms to be reserved at the state rate if you are enrolled in a UW-L class. Be sure to mention it when you make your reservation and bring a copy of your schedule and a school ID to identify yourself as a student/school employee.
