Psychology of Aging
Using Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this workshop explores the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes associated with aging and elders. The diversity of aging experiences is considered as we investigate how elders meet their physical and belonging needs. We will pay special attention to the differences between normal, typical aging and pathological, disease-related conditions related to aging. The growing concerns of depression, suicide, and other mental health issues are also examined. (Certificate core program)
Course Objectives:
- Provide participants with research-based findings on the normal psychological processes of aging and the pathological processes.
- Increase participants’ empathy and understanding of aging and elders in diverse life circumstances.
- Encourage participants to apply information in personal, professional and public policy contexts.
