Picture of John Kunz.Instructor: John Kunz, BSW, MS, has worked in the field of mental health since 1978. He has worked as a psychotherapist, author and educator. John has written and produced over a dozen educational videos. His book, Transformational Reminiscence: Life Story Work, was published April 2007. He is most known for his work in the field of reminiscence and life review within the field of gerontology. He founded the International Institute for Reminiscence and Life Review in 1995. He continues to direct this institute, it’s biennial conferences and many other health and human issues programs at the Center for Continuing Education and Extension at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Morning Session: Life Stories

8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (registration at 8 a.m.)
.35 CEUs (3.5 contact hours)

Entertaining and informative, the morning session explores wisdom and creativity in the second half of life. Emphasis is placed on the research into cognitive and psychosocial growth as we age. Utilizing the Life Story Matrix, the practical uses of reminiscence and life review to increase the quality of life and relationships of older adults will be demonstrated. Inspiring and practical for anyone interested in keeping aging brains healthy and happy.

Objectives
  • Define reminiscence and life review
  • Understand the neurological basis of wisdom and creativity
  • Understand the role of autobiographical work in brain development
  • Explore the uses of reminiscence in family and work settings

Afternoon Session: Interventions & Groups for Adults with Dementia

1-4:30 p.m. (registration at 12:30 p.m.)
.35 CEUs (3.5 contact hours)

The afternoon session will provide participants with the tools needed work with older adults who have dementia. Based on the theory of "retrogenesis", participants will observe and practice skills for each successive level of dementia related confusion. Participants will also learn to plan and conduct a group process based on reminiscence and life review. The participants will learn techniques that engage individuals and encourage a sense of competence and dignity.

Objectives
  • Learn to use the Reisberg Scale of Cognitive Decline and the theory of “retrogenesis”
  • Distinguish between “reality orientation” and “validation therapy”
  • Plan appropriate approaches for problem behaviors
  • Recognize the value of social and therapeutic groups
  • Learn to set up and carry out the stages of a therapeutic group
  • Observe & practice the stages of a therapeutic group process for older adults in learner’s own specific settings
