(Penny Tiedt, narrator)
The Young Scholars program is a pre-college program and is a program that includes sciences and the arts. It’s offered for students going into grades 5 through 9. The real premise of the program is to have, provide, is to have hands on educational experiences that students don’t necessarily receive in their traditional classroom setting.

This class is making our home on the web. We are making web pages about anything we decide we want to. I’m making one to advertise our schools first Lego League. Um, the person next to me is making one about monkeys. Another person next to me is making one about the planets.
(Girl 1)
I’m taking the web designing class and I’m also taking the TV production class and so I’m learning a lot about technology through all of that.
(Penny Tiedt)
One of the classes that we offer is Television Production, and in that class the students learn how to actually be someone on television, a news, or news broadcaster. They actually edit, copy, they run the television cameras. They learn all the steps that it takes to be, to do a television production.
(Girl 2)
My favorite part about hearing voices and making imaginary friend is writing poetry. We make up imaginary friends and we write stories about them, and we write poetry and we learn a lot about being creative, and this is a really fun class. I like it a lot.
(Penny Tiedt)
In a chemistry class they will be solving a mystery. It will be
sort of like CSI on television. They’ll be doing lots of hands
on activities, many of these classes are offered in labs.
Chemistry, biology, physics they use high powered microscopes.
They use all of the equipment college students use.
One of the classes that’s offered is called amazing body. And in
that class the students learn pretty much how their body works.
They learn about muscles and joints, they learn how doctors
diagnose diseases.
(Girl 3)
Amazing body is really fun because we play dodge ball, we learned about fitness and health. And we did speed stacks which helps your hand eye coordination.
(Girl 4)
I love moving around I love beings active, and this is like a
great way to be active.
(Girl 3)
You do team work so you meet a lot of new people. You get to know their names and everything.
(Girl 1)
I just moved here from Phoenix, a few weeks ago so I you know I, I don’t have many friends here so it’s nice to meet people.
(Girl 3)
I thought it was very well organized and it was really fun they made the classes with a lot of activities so you get a lot of hands on stuff.
(Girl 4)
It’s like a great way to like learn how to do stuff and be active and not like sit around all day like watching TV, it’s great to be able to do this.
(Penny Tiedt)
Students should come to the In Scholars program because it gives them a great opportunity to have fun, to be on a college campus, to learn about exciting classes and it gives them an exciting place to be during the summer.
