Master of Education-Professional Development (MEPD)

The Master of Education-Professional Development Program offers a flexible, individualized degree either to attain personal professional growth or to develop competencies directly related to career needs. Because the program is flexible, students can focus on specific education and training areas to hone their skills and enhance their employability in a variety of fields.

The Master of Education-Professional Development Program is actually two professional programs: Initial Certification and Professional Development. Students wishing to earn a teaching license should apply for Initial Certification. Individuals seeking a master's degree to increase their marketability in Education should apply for Professional Development.

Special Education

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Special Education Program approved by the State of Wisconsin, Department of Public Instruction, prepares candidates as cross-categorical (Cognitive Disabilities, Emotional Behavior Disorders, & Specific Learning Disabilities) special educators for two developmental age ranges: Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence (approximately grades 1-9) or Early Adolescence through Adolescence (approximately grades 9-12).

There are two program tracks available to Graduate Students: Master’s degree with or without certification in cross-categorical special education, or cross-categorical special education certification only. You must complete the Master’s degree with certification program-track if you do not hold or are not currently eligible for a Wisconsin teaching license.

Reading Program

Reading Education at UW-La Crosse is built on a firm foundation of best practice and current research in literacy. This multifaceted program is designed to meet the needs of educators who are interested in ongoing professional development in reading education as well as those who are interested in pursuing a master’s degree in education. There are three different options for the master’s degree: classroom teacher, reading teacher or reading specialist. Graduate students may also pursue Wisconsin 316 or 17 licensure as a Reading Teacher or Reading Specialist.
