Special Education Program

All certification candidates must complete an electronic professional portfolio and pass the Praxis tests (Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) & Praxis II Middle School Content Test #0146). 

Program tracks:

SPE candidates can earn certification in one of five program tracks.

  1. undergraduate degree-seeking certification minor
  2. undergraduate non-degree-seeking (add-on) certification sequence
         NOTE: Federal financial aid is not available for students pursuing an ad-on teaching certification. Private 
                  educational loan opportunities are also limited for non-degree seeking students.

Admissions to the Special Education Graduate Program are currently on hold.

  1. graduate initial certification w/ Master’s degree
  2. graduate add-on certification w/ Master’s degree
  3. graduate add-on certification w/o Master’s degree

Developmental ranges:

  1. Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (ages 6-13 years)
  2. Early Adolescence-Adolescence (ages 10-21 years)

Undergraduate degree-seeking candidates complete a minor in special education and a major in Middle-Childhood-Early Adolescence (MC-EA) or a content area major at the Early Adolescence-Adolescence (EA-A) developmental range.

Undergraduate non-degree-seeking (add-on) certification candidates complete a special education course sequence in Middle-Childhood-Early Adolescence (MC-EA) or Early Adolescence-Adolescence (EA-A) education.

Candidates holding a baccalaureate degree in education may choose to earn add-on Cross-Categorical Special Education licensure at the undergraduate level only.  NOTE: Federal financial aid is not available for students pursuing an ad-on teaching certification. Private educational loan opportunities are also limited for non-degree seeking students.

Graduate candidates complete certification requirements in either an ‘initial’ certification with Master’s degree or ‘add-on’ certification with Master’s degree optional program track at the same developmental range options as undergraduate candidates.

Graduate students may earn a Master of Science in Education in Special Education degree. Those students earning an initial teacher education certification MUST complete the Master’s degree requirements along with certification requirements. Candidates holding a valid Wisconsin Teaching license or provide evidence of eligibility may choose to ‘add-on’ certification with or without a Master’s degree.
