Welcome
to the first electronic version of our newsletter entitled
"Innovations." In the past this newsletter was
distributed on paper, but this year we wanted to try electronic
distribution. This publication marks a collaboration of
technical expertise and hard work from your friends in Educational
Technologies, a department within the ITS Division.
This edition of Innovations features the
debut of our first Flash® animation site. I must congratulate
the team of: student intern, Adam Bradley, Flash animation,
Larry Sleznikow, project coordination, editing, and photography,
and student intern, Josh Ciolkosz, for newsletter writing.
The purpose of this electronic newsletter
is to keep the campus community apprised of projects and
initiatives that deal with various aspects of instructional
technologies. Articles might cover upcoming classroom renovation
projects and how they aid teaching, segments on new technologies
for teaching and research, or articles on successful projects
that have helped promote the campus, departments, staff,
and students. Innovations will be published periodically
throughout the semester to keep you in touch with work we
are doing across the campus, including projects on the web,
in the classroom, or throughout the region.
I encourage you to e-mail me with your
feedback on this electronic version, and to offer other
suggestions for articles and topics. Educational
Technologies is but one element of the ITS
Division that supports your efforts at UW-L.
The ITS
Support Center, Network
Services, Technical
Support Services, and Enterprise Computing Systems are
all here to offer you their services.

Distance Education Brings
Us Together
Distance education (DE) makes available unique educational
opportunities for students at UW-La Crosse and other
schools around the state and places around the world.
Currently, UW-L is receiving two Japanese language
courses, two Russian language courses, two medical
lab science courses, a psychology class, and an American
Indian language course from other educational institutions.
UW-L is also sending a Chinese language course, a
psychology course and a microbiology course via DE.
These courses would not be available if not for the
DE technology coordinated by Terry Wirkus (5-8049),
Educational Technologies DE manager.

CD-ROM Promotes UW-L College
The College of Science and Allied Health (CSAH) wanted
to create an eye-catching promotional piece to send
to high school students and others interested in the
College's programs. They wanted something that would
attract the viewer's attention and encourage them
to interact with the information.

Visual Communications on Campus
Visual Communications (Viscom), a unit within Educational
Technologies, offers a wide variety of media related
services to our campus. Formerly called Photo Services,
Viscom has provided photography and photo printing
expertise to UW-L for many years, but the range of
our services has broadened to meet the needs of faculty,
staff, and students. We've also added digital photography
and scanning, web site design and consultation, multimedia
creation, and full graphic design services.

Classrooms of the Future
Today!
When you imagine the average classroom these days,
you'll likely picture a blackboard, some chalk dust
and maybe an overhead projector or TV and VCR tucked
away in the corner. Everybody is familiar with these
things and has grown used to them in the classroom
from kindergarten on. However, as technology accompanies
our society into the twenty-first century, students,
faculty and staff at UW-La Crosse are already experiencing
the classrooms of the future.
