Earth Week Schedule

SATURDAY APRIL 14th:

  • Join us for our free Renewable Energy Workshop 101 brought to you by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. The focus of the day long workshop will be on gaining a working understanding of energy and the most common and viable renewable energy technology.

  • Tentative workshop topics include:

  • Photovoltaics

  • Wind

  • Solar domestic hot water

  • Energy efficiency

  • Sustainable living

  • Renew Wisconsin

  • Schedule for the Day

  • 8:30-9am         Check-in

  • 9-12:30             Workshops

  • 12:30-1:30        Lunch (not provided)

MONDAY APRIL 16th:

  • 10:30AM-2:30PM: Dumpster Dive at the Hoeschler Clock tower on the UW-L Campus. This annual event is held to promote recycling on campus at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Every spring a dumpster full of trash is brought to the middle of campus, and tipped over. Volunteers then sort through the trash and sort out anything that should have been recycled. Anyone is welcome to come and dig!

  • 4:00-5:30PM: Highway Cleanup: Show our lovely planet some lovin’ by making it sparkle and shine! LOCATION: 1 mile north of Cass St. Bridge, meet in Reinhart Center Viterbo (9th and Jackson)  @ 4:00 PM

  • 7:00– 8:00 PM : Food For Thought: A panel of local food experts will speak on a multitude of issues including food sovereignty, Hmong and Native communities, genetic diversity, growing food organically and traditionally, and environmental degradation on a local level.

TUESDAY APRIL 17th

  • 10:00 AM - 2:00PM:  UW-L Environmental Art Show: This free event is open to UW-L students to show and/or sell their “nature” themed artwork. Be Creative! Any students interested in showing artwork please contact Carly Dilworth now to get signed up! Mary Rehwald speaks on Building Sustainable Communities

  •  4:00-5:00pm - ENGAGING LOCAL GOVERNMENTS - This presentation is open to the public but will focus on elected officials, government and agency people, and the steps that local governments can take to become sustainable communities.

  • 7:00-9:00 PM - ENERGISING THE PUBLC - Encouragement and guidance will be offered to citizens on individual and collective ways to build

  •  8:00-10:00 : Earth Day Open Mic : This event is open to everyone to come sing a tune or speak a poem! Come share your environmental/nature

WEDNESDAY APRIL 18TH

  • 9:00 AM - ENLISTING YOUNG PEOPLE - Mary Rehwald will present to a Viterbo Biology class will give an overview of the concept of sustainability, how to achieve and maintain it, how to one’s personal choices and society’s values need to change, and how to find the courage to effect those changes. Visitors are welcome! LOCATION: Murphy Center, Viterbo Campus, Room 432

  • 4:00-6:00 PM : International Coffee Hour: A panel of international students will be speaking about what the measures their countries are taking to tackle global warming. It will be an open discussion so bring any questions you may have.  Fair Trade Coffee and snacks will be available for free!  Location: Diversity Center, CC

  • 7:00-8:00 : Chad Kister will speak on the massive impacts of climate change in the Arctic that threatens not only the polar bear, but humanity as well.  For more info on Chad visit: www.chadkister.com. To see him in person, come to the Ward Room, UW-L Campus.

  • 6:30-8:00PM : Earth and Environment : Come hear literature or share your own creations about nature and the environment! To read your own or other literature please contact:

THURSDAY APRIL 19th

  • 5:00-6:00 PM: Chris Schneider, Hybrid Guru, will be giving a presentation on hybrids in room 332 CC, UW-L.

  • 7:00-9:00 PM - ‘Who Killed the Electric Car’ - This documentary investigates the birth and death of the electric car, as well as the role of renewable energy and sustainable living in the future.                                  LOCATION: Room 208 Graff Main Hall

FRIDAY APRIL 20TH

  • 3:00 PM: Campus/neighborhood cleanup, Help us keep our lovely little earth clean and tidy before the big day! Come one come all! LOCATION: Hoeschler Clock tower on the UW-L Campus

    • 1) Cul-de-sac in Leuth Park.

    • 2) Near the trail-head in Myrick

  • 9:30-11:00 - 3rd Annual “Hawk Ridge” Earth Day Hike @ Hawk Ridge Nature Preserve, 1 mile N. or La Crescent
