FOCUS: Social Responsibility, Ethical Globalization, Service Learning
Students will come face to face with crucial issues about globalization and its impact on communities to better understand them and see socially responsible business and other grassroots solutions in action.
All students from all majors are invited to learn about:
· Education challenges facing East Africa through Service Learning projects that include:
o Interacting with schoolchildren to teach English and basic computer skills, planting trees, classroom building, painting, and soccer and netball minor renovations.
o Participating in evening sporting events with the schoolchildren accompanied by a message “empowering girls through education”. http://www.girleffect.org/#/splash/
· Health care challenges through visits with Nkoaranga Hospital staff and Service Learning projects that include visiting patients and orphans at the hospital’s orphanage.
COLLECT DONATIONS OF SPORTING EQUIPMENT, SCHOOL AND OTHER SUPPLIES LIKE TOOTHBRUSHES TO TAKE TO THE SCHOOLS, HOSPITAL & ORPHANAGE!
· International justice in a visit to the International Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), created by the UN Security Council in order to judge those people responsible for the acts of 1994 Rwanda genocide.
· Socially responsible tourism through a one-day hike to the first hut on Mt. Kilimanjaro and 3 days of safari.
· Fair trade and worker cooperatives by getting involved with coffee processing: picking coffee by hand, pulping and drying.
· The impact of development on indigenous people through a visit to a Masaai village.
· Human rights in a visit to former slave chambers on Zanzibar, and Bagamoyo, a historical Swahili town that was once a terminus for Slave Caravans,
· The role of government in responsible and sustainable development.
