The primary emphasis of this course is on the treatment and management of pediatric and adult patients with neurologic impairments. Physical therapy treatment of movement dysfunction of neurologically impaired patients will be presented based on results of the neurological examination interpreted via a systems-based approach incorporating the concepts of motor control/motor learning literature. Treatment planning will be instructed using a systems-based approach. Students will learn to perform a variety of treatment techniques to remediate movement dysfunction in various areas of the body as well as learning how treatment of distant body sites can impact on remote areas. Classical physical therapy treatment approaches will be discussed relative to the model of body-brain interaction upon which each was originally based. Hierarchically-based treatment approaches will be re-evaluated based on a systems-based model of body-brain interaction. Principles of patient management relative to habilitation and rehabilitation will be presented.
Course is offered in the Fall semester only.
