Research Interests

My research interests are the relational, managerial and strategic issues associated with IT outsourcing/offshoring.  I am particularly interested in how relational factors influence the evaluation of IT offshoring success.  The objective of my dissertation is to identify the relational drivers and inhibitors of IT offshoring success.  My work also identifies how different stakeholders within the organization evaluates IT offshoring success based on process and outcome success criteria.  A series of case studies will be conducted to evaluate the relational factors and stakeholder evaluations of IT offshoring success.  This dissertation’s study of IT offshoring success through a process and outcome lens is unique to information systems research.  In sum, this dissertation will examine IT offshoring relationships and stakeholder perceptions of success that has yet to be comprehensively explored and will address a variety of research questions of unique value to both information systems researchers and practitioners.

I have already completed research that has examined the ethical challenges involved with the IT offshoring decision.  This study was conducted through an examination of a case study involving an organizations decision to offshore IT activities.  This research revealed that a variety of ethically viable decisions can occur based on the ethical lens that the organization's management elects to implement.  The research is among the first studies to examine IT offshoring through an ethical lens.

I am also interested in the impact and development of trust in e-commerce.  Particularly, I am examining the initial trust formation through the concept of thin slice exposure.  Thin slices are short, initial glimpses of a phenomenon.  Many ordinary day-to-day impressions and judgments occur rapidly, unwittingly and intuitively and once these initial judgments are made they become the anchor from which subsequent judgments are made.  Thin slice judgments have been found in the the marketing environment to be fairly accurate in judgments of personality and teacher effectiveness.  To date, initial trust formation has received attention in the literature, however the time frame needed to create initial trust perceptions has not received the needed attention.  The goal of the research is to determine the power of the first impression through the thin slice judgment to impact trust, emotional responses and the stickiness of the website base on the initial thin slice judgment.

Additionally, I am involved in investigating the impact of the informal network on the achievement of IS alignment.  The informal networks within the organization may provide the link to creating the relationships and processes geared at increasing communication and planning throughout the organization that is consistently identified as essential for achieving IS alignment.  The potential research findings may suggest that the informal network structures inherent within an organization, as opposed to the formal network structures, play a significant role in achieving IS alignment and may more accurately reflect the dynamic interactions required to achieve IS alignment.

The acceptance of utility computing is another flavor of IT outsourcing that I have focused on through my research.  Utility computing is a developing alternative to traditional techniques for purchasing computing resources.  Utility computing as it is envisioned will allow firm's the ability to dynamically scale up and down computing resources as needed and pay only for the resources consumed.  This research presents a theoretically grounded model which hypothesizes the drivers of utility computing acceptance.  This study is being conducted through a series of in-depth interviews and large scale quantitative survey administered to multiple industries.
