Presented at the Wisconsin Mathematics Council's 41st Annual Conference
Green Lake, WI, on May 7, 2009
Abstract: Understanding mathematics is at the centerpiece of our local and state standards. This session will highlight how we can help our students to not only do a procedure, but also to determine when to apply them and why they are being applied. Using a learner-centered framework for procedural understanding, teachers will actively transform traditional homework problems into understanding tasks to capture high levels of student thinking. Numerous activities and assessments that have been created to solicit procedural understanding in Algebra will also be shared.
