Calculus is one of the most elegant and strongest tools of Mathematics.  In this class you will learn about derivatives and integrals. Applications exist in many areas and we will cover many throughout the semester.  We will work with exponential and logarithm functions, but not with trigonometric ones.

Advice from Former Students

Study Plan*

Each day, students should choose 3 to 5 problems from the homework that they feel represents the material from that section.  Each problem should be written down on a recipe card.  On one side the entire problem should be copied down without reference to where it was found in the book.  On the other side, the location of the problem (i.e. section 1.1 #85) and the answer should be written.  When it is time to study for an exam, the students should mix their problems up and try to work them all out.  They can easily check the answers on the backs of the cards and know which sections they need to go over more carefully.  Below is a sample card.

The Island of Manhattan was sold for $24 in 1626.  How much would this amount have grown to by 2006 if it had been invested at 6% compounded quarterly?

section 5.2 #45

$161,657,351,965.80

*This should be part of your study plan for this class, but should not be all that you do to prepare for classes.

Where else can I get help?

Math Department Learning Center

Weekly Math 175 recitation sessions

I have had several students who have found help with test taking skills at the Counseling and Testing Center.  This is available to all students.  If you feel you know the material, but your quizzes and exams do not reflect this, try going to this office and see if they can help.

Private Tutors     There is a list of private tutors in Cowley 1020.  Students need to pay the tutors for this help. The first     two options are free, so I would suggest trying those first.

Note:  Calculators are useful for some homework for this class, but calculators are not allowed on quizzes and exams for this class.
