PROJECTS GUIDELINES

We are organized into Sub-Field Groups in order to investigate the various subfields of academic political science in more depth. Each group will present an oral report to the class and a written report for me.

Step I. Defining Your Sub-Field:

(a)    The American Political Science Association (APSA) is organized into numerous Sections, each focused on a specialized aspect of the study of politics. I want each Group to read through the entire “Call for Papers” handout: Identify those APSA Sections which relate most closely to your Sub-Field (more than one Section will probably be relevant). Review the descriptions for the Sections you select, and take note of words and phrases which might help you construct your own definition of your Sub-Field.

(b)   Study the reading assignments for your group’s sub-field. See below.

(c)    Do a Web Search for your Sub-Field, especially any web pages kept by an APSA Section; check also the APSA web page for links -- http://www.apsanet.org/index.cfm. Explore any links you may encounter, keeping track of bibliography and research sources for your written report.

(d)   Write your best definition of your sub-field. This will be the first part of your Oral Report and your Written Report.

Step II. Bibliography Exercise:

(a)    Investigate the “Library of Congress Subject Headings” used by Murphy Library. Search for LC Subject Headings that pertain to your sub-field. Make a list, describing each heading for your Reports.

(b)   Find the ten latest acquisitions by Murphy Library within your sub-field, using the Subjects Headings from (a) above. Skim these books, if available, perusing the table of contents and index. Look for published book reviews of these books. Present a brief annotation to each book in your Reports.

(c)    Identify the major academic journals held by Murphy Library pertaining to your sub-field. Review the tables of content for the last three years and summarize their topics.

Part III. Primary Research Questions: To the best of your ability, list the “big issues” in your Sub-Field, as revealed in your earlier research. Write out as many as seem appropriate.

REQUIREMENTS: (a) Give a 20-25 minute oral report to the entire class; (b) submit a written report on your work with your sub-field. Dates to be announced later.

Please let me know how I can help you with this assignment!
