Andrea Jilbert's piece may seem like simply a narrative of dorm life, but she does move into ethnographic analysis at the end. Unfortunately, the analysis is rather brief and mechanical. But this is the first ethnography she has ever written, and she had only about 4 weeks for research and writing . . . and learning the nature of ethnographies. This piece represents a remarkable leap forward for Andrea. Before she found a subject that deeply engaged her, her writing for the course was not very strong. But here she pulls together—in a most engaging way—the lessons I had been teaching on prose style, on using imagery as a descriptive technique, on narrative structure.
