Current Research Projects and Pictures

In July, 2002 I became Executive Director of the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) and Professor of Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin La-Crosse.  My research interests are Midwest and Plains archaeology.  I worked at the Office of the State Archaeologist of Iowa for many years; I served as an Associate Dean and Professor of Anthropology at Cal Poly Pomona; and I was an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Iowa State University Archaeological Laboratory from 1994-2002.

My family has farmed in Iowa for five generations.  While the house built by my great great grandfather at the Tiffany Homestead (presently the Forest Maxwell farm) is no longer standing, nearby is a small country church, Ashton Chapel, built by my great grandfather and his neighbors in northwest Jasper County, Iowa over 100 years ago. The opening image is a group photo from the Clear Creek country school near Ashton and the Tiffany Homestead.

I have two daughters. Christine is a graduate of The University of Iowa with a B.A. in Education and Spanish.  She is now teaching dual language 2nd grade at West Liberty Elementary School, West Liberty, IA.  Her husband,  Randy Guerra, is in the Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Supervision in the College of Education at The University of Iowa.  Christine and Randy have two children. Addison turned two this April.  Lila Elizabeth   turned five this August and has started Kindergarten at Longfellow Elementary School in Iowa City. Here are recent picturesEmma  graduated with a BA degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of California-Santa Cruz.  She is now in graduate school at Sacramento State University working on a Masters degree in Social Work.  Emma lives in Tuolumne with her two dogs, Scrappy and Sampson.

My wife, Lauren, is Executive Director of the Midwest Sociological Society.
