I strongly recommend that you make use of the resources available in Murphy Library at the beginning of your research project, as well as throughout the writing process. Using materials/ resources, and consulting with reference librarians in the library are the most efficient ways for you to research and write the best paper that you are capable of writing. Be sure to use the journals and books that are physically housed in the library. If students do not continue to use on-campus resources for research, funding for those resources may disappear. There are many journals and books that Murphy Library does not own and that are not available on-line. You should plan ahead to make use of the library Inter-Library Loan Program. The use of a combination of sources from Murphy, Inter-Library Loan, and On-line available peer-reviewed journals will allow you to utilize the best set of resources for your papers.

In addition to using the library and related online resources for gathering data or literature for your paper, be sure to use the library and  the English Department's Writing Center to assist you in improving your writing skills. Be absolutely certain that you follow the paper guidelines that correspond to the course that you are taking with me (they should be available under the individual course home page).

I am a stickler for accurate referencing using the American Sociological Association (ASA) Referencing Style. You may purchase the ASA guide in the University Bookstore, or go to the ASA website to order a copy. I have a zero tolerance policy regarding plagiarism and the use of materials that were not written by the student, but handed in as their own work. Please see the Murphy Library guidelines, or come and speak with me personally, if you are confused or concerned about what constitutes plagiarism.

Another way to expand your research skills is to get involved with UW-L's Undergraduate Research Program. This program allows students to further their research and career interests by working with UW-L faculty to design creative/scholarly work that can be presented or published at local, regional, and national conferences.

Below is a list of websites and peer-reviewed journals that you might find useful for different courses or topics within sociology that I regularly teach. Note that these are not exhaustive or exclusive lists.
